Update on Otto! 🐾❤️

Otto did great with his procedure yesterday! Although, judging by the look on his face, I don’t think he was too happy about it. 🤣

Otto was adopted back in August from City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, and this sweet boy has already been through so much. He’s been shot multiple times with a pellet gun, has mobility issues, battled and overcome pneumonia, and is also heartworm positive.

His adopters recently reached out to see if we could help with the cost of his echocardiogram. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to say yes! ❤️

This family has already done so much for Otto. They just needed a little extra support, and that’s exactly why our Community Animal Support Program exists.

They have been absolutely wonderful to work with, and it makes my heart happy to see Otto surrounded by people who love him and are committed to giving him the life he deserves.

We hear so much about the heartbreaking side of animal welfare, but there are also some truly amazing people out there doing wonderful things for animals every single day.

Otto and his family are a beautiful reminder of that. 🥹❤️

Update on Reggie🩵

A few weeks back, Reggie got his first ever bath and he did great🥹

He’s doing so well and we love getting updates on him.

Reggie was adopted in August and boy what a story he had. He now gets to live in Iowa, with a wonderful mom and have the best life🩵

I don’t think Reggie has ever seen snow. ❄️ these will be fun updates in the next months.

🐾 September Community Impact Thus Far

This month, our work extended far beyond the animals we were able to assist directly.

❤️ We provided two families with dog and cat food, along with blankets, kennels, deworming, preventatives, bottles, puppy formula, and other essential supplies.

🌈 We helped two families say goodbye to their beloved dogs, assisting with compassionate, humane euthanasia so they could pass peacefully and with dignity.

⚖️ Our Director also attended a two-day animal cruelty hearing, continuing our commitment to advocacy, accountability, and staying informed about cases impacting animals in our community.

📩 Behind the scenes, we continue to answer emails and messages from people looking for help, connecting families with veterinary care, spay/neuter services, pet food, medical assistance, rescue resources, and other community programs.

🔆We still have Mitty and Sophia in our care with our small grassroots rescue program-Bandera Dogs Rescue Mission.

We also spend countless hours researching resources, communicating with community partners, following up on cases, helping people navigate available services, and advocating for solutions that keep animals safe and families together. In addition, we meet with the ACS Director, council members and other leaders to navigate this crisis.

Every donation helps us to continue the work that we do. We have a waiting list, so every $1 counts.

Happy Friday🫶🏼

We love receiving photos from our adopters!
Josie was adopted 7 months ago by her lovely mom who flew all the way from Massachusetts.

Josie continues to appreciate her big dog sister Millie and is one happy girl thanks to her mom.

Over the last two days, our Director attended the hearing regarding We Care Wildlife Sanctuary alongside several community members.

What was presented through photographs, veterinary findings, and testimony was horrifying and heartbreaking. There were audible gasps, and many people had tears in their eyes.

According to testimony, animals removed from the property had body condition scores ranging from 1–4 on a 1–9 scale.

Two Friesian horses reportedly scored below a 3, with visible hips and spines, muscle loss, parasites, and dehydration. The veterinarian caring for them testified that their condition was consistent with inadequate nutrition over an extended period time (8-9 months of improper food/water).

Their foal had died and was reportedly left decomposing in the same enclosure, with dogs having access to the remains.

Animal bones were found in empty troughs. Trees had been stripped of bark. A ball python reportedly had a body condition score of 1/9 and was so frail responders initially thought the snake was dead. Another horse was so bony, due to muscle loss, she had rain rot on top of her back because rain got stuck there.

And this was only a fraction of what was presented.

This hits close to home for us after spending years working on a hoarding case in Bandera County. We know how difficult it can be to get intervention, and we are grateful something is being done for these animals.

If you see something, say something.

Know who you’re donating to. Pay attention to red flags. Ask nonprofits questions. Accountability matters.

Thank you to the Bandera community, officials, American Humane, the San Antonio Zoo, veterinarians, staff, caregivers, and everyone who helped make this intervention possible.

And a special thank you to Sue Calberg with KENS 5 News for continuing to cover this story and helping bring these concerns to the public.

There is still a legal process underway, and we respect that process.

Animals deserve so much better. 🐾

😂 Happy Hump Day from Peanut! 🐾

Peanut would like everyone to know that productivity is highly overrated.

Why work at a desk when you can:

* Lay directly on the laptop.
* Block access to the keyboard.
* Roll upside down for absolutely no reason.
* Demand attention while contributing NOTHING to the workload.

Apparently, Peanut has promoted herself to Director of Workplace Disruptions🤣 and we are oh so proud of her!
