September is Animal Pain Awareness Month — and at Honnas Veterinary, we think it's one of the most important conversations pet parents can have. 🐾❤️

Here's the hard truth about our furry friends: they're masters at hiding their pain. It's a survival instinct wired into them — in the wild, showing weakness makes you a target. So our pets often suffer quietly, and by the time we notice something's wrong, they may have been hurting for a while.

The good news? You don't need to be a vet to spot the signs. You just need to know what to look for. Here are a few common clues that your pet might be in pain:
Behavior changes — hiding, withdrawing, becoming more clingy or more aggressive than usual Movement changes — limping, stiffness, or trouble getting up, down, or into their favorite spot Appetite changes — eating less, or suddenly snapping or guarding their food
Grooming changes — over-licking a specific spot, or letting their coat go dull and unkempt Breathing changes — panting, rapid or shallow breaths, even at rest
Posture changes — hunched back, tucked tail, or holding a leg up

Untreated pain doesn't just hurt — it can slow healing, disrupt sleep, and quietly lower your pet's quality of life. But here's the encouraging part: so much of it is treatable, especially when caught early.

If you are on the fence though, take a look at these 10 reasons why they are to be protected at all costs!

1. Contrary to popular belief, orange cats can be insanely intelligent! They’ll figure out puzzle toys, open cabinets, and outsmart you when snacks are involved.

2. Once they pick their favorite person, they are insanely loyal. They’ll follow you room to room, sleep on your pillow, and always show up when you’re having a rough day.

3. They love food — like, really love food. They’ll eat just about anything, which makes treat time and mealtime extra fun (just watch those portions!).

4. They provide endless entertainment. Nobody knows why orange cats do the random things they do — staring at walls, zooming at 3 AM, carrying around random objects — but you’ll never be bored.

5. They’re often very relaxed and go with the flow. Most orange cats have that easygoing, “whatever, I’m chill” energy that makes them great for apartments, families, and first-time cat owners.

If you're on the fence about spaying or neutering your pet, you're not alone — it's a big decision, and there's a lot of information out there. Here's why we recommend it and what you should know.

For females (spay):
Eliminates the risk of pyometra — a life-threatening infection of the uterus that requires emergency surgery
Greatly reduces the chance of mammary cancer, especially when done before the first heat cycle
No heat cycles, no unwanted pregnancies, no mess

For males (neuter):
Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer entirely
Reduces the risk of prostate problems later in life
Can help curb roaming, urine marking, and hormone-driven aggression

Millions of healthy pets end up in shelters every year. Spaying and neutering is the most effective way to reduce pet overpopulation and save lives.

What age should I spay my pet? There's no single answer that fits every pet. Timing depends on breed, size, age, and overall health. Large-breed dogs, for example, may benefit from waiting longer than small breeds. We're happy to talk through what makes sense for your individual pet.

We've been absolutely spoiled with the most adorable puppies and kittens — tiny paws, sleepy eyes, wagging tails, and purrs that could melt the hardest heart. From first checkups to vaccine visits, every single one of them reminded us why we love what we do.

Happy national take your cat to the vet day!
If you have a cat, you already know: they're masters at hiding when something's wrong. It's a survival instinct — in the wild, showing weakness made you a target. By the time most cat owners notice a problem, their cat has often been uncomfortable for weeks or even months.
That's exactly why this day exists — to remind us that our feline friends need regular checkups too, even if they seem perfectly fine.

Here's what we check at a yearly wellness visit:
🩺 Full physical exam — Eyes, ears, teeth, heart, lungs, abdomen, joints, skin, and coat
💉 Vaccine review — Rabies, FVRCP, and FeLV if recommended for your cat
🧪 F***l exam — Checking for intestinal parasites (yes, even indoor cats can get them)
🩸 Bloodwork — Baseline organ function screening, especially important as cats get older
⚖️ Weight check — Unexplained weight changes are often the first clue something's going on

Some of the most common conditions we catch early with routine visits:
Dental disease (extremely common in cats)
Chronic kidney disease
Hyperthyroidism
Diabetes
Arthritis

The goal isn't to wait until your cat seems sick. It's to keep them healthy in the first place.

You're great about bringing your pet in for their yearly exam — and that's a huge first step. But here's something a lot of pet parents don't realize: a physical exam only tells part of the story.
Annual lab work gives us a look at what's going on inside your pet's body, often long before they show any signs of being sick. Think of it as preventive maintenance for their health.

Urinalysis 💧
We check kidney function, hydration, and screen for urinary tract infections, crystals, and early signs of diabetes. A simple urine sample gives us a surprising amount of information.
F***l Exam 🧪
We look at a stool sample under the microscope to check for intestinal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and giardia. Many of these can be passed to people too — so annual fecals help protect the whole family, not just your pet.
Bloodwork 🩸
A complete blood count and chemistry panel evaluates organ function (liver, kidneys, pancreas), blood sugar, protein levels, and red and white blood cell counts. This is how we catch things like early kidney disease, thyroid issues, and anemia before they become serious.

Why annually? Pets age much faster than we do — a year in their life is like several years in ours. Waiting until something seems wrong often means a problem is already advanced. Annual testing gives us a baseline and helps us spot changes early, when treatment is most effective. Your pet can't tell us when something feels off. Their lab work can.

At Honnas Veterinary, we believe compassionate care should extend to all animals — big or small, furry or feathery. 🐦❤️

Earlier this week, our team spotted a tiny baby bird on the sidewalk just outside our clinic. The Texas heat was brutal, and this little one didn't stand a chance on their own. So we did what we do: we stepped in.

We named them Coffee Bean, gave them water and a safe, shaded spot to rest, and watched as this little bird won over every single person on our staff. Coffee Bean hung out with us through the morning, and during lunch, one of our team members drove them to a local wildlife rehab facility.

Now Coffee Bean is in expert hands — they'll be cared for, monitored, and eventually released back into the wild where they belong.

It wasn't a complicated rescue. It didn't take a lot of time or money. It just took a team that cares enough to notice the little lives around us.

We're proud of our staff for always going above and beyond — whether it's a complicated surgery or a baby bird named Coffee Bean. 🫘✨

Keeping your dog current on vaccines is one of the simplest, most effective ways to protect them (and your family) from serious illness.

💉Rabies — Required by law in many places and protects against a nearly always-fatal disease that can be transmitted to humans.
💉DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) — A combo vaccine that covers several serious viruses. Parvovirus, in particular, can be deadly for puppies.
💉Bordetella — Often called “kennel cough.” Highly contagious in places where dogs mix (boarding, daycare, groomers, dog parks).
💉Leptospirosis — Bacterial disease spread through wildlife urine and standing water; common in many areas and can infect people too.
💉Canine Influenza (Dog Flu) — Recommended when dogs socialize a lot (daycare, boarding, dog parks, frequent travel, grooming). Dog flu spreads quickly and can cause severe respiratory illness in some dogs.
