Halloween is almost here — costumes, candy, and lots of fun. But it comes with hidden dangers for our furry friends.

Keep these out of paw's reach:
🍫 Chocolate — toxic to dogs and cats, especially dark
🍬 Xylitol — in sugar-free gum/candy, extremely toxic to dogs
🍇 Raisins & grapes — can cause kidney failure in dogs
🎃 Moldy pumpkins & corn cobs — upset stomachs and blockages
🕯️ Candles, glow sticks & cords — curious pets will investigate
🎭 Costumes — make sure they fit comfortably with no chewable parts

Quick tips:
🐾 Keep candy bowls out of reach
🐾 Give pets a quiet room during trick-or-treat hours
🐾 Make sure they have a registered microchip — doors will be opening all night

Is your pet a TV fan? 📺🐾

Believe it or not, pet TV can be a surprisingly great tool for enrichment! Just like window watching, it gives your pet something to see, hear, and engage with — turning a quiet, boring afternoon into a little entertainment. Here's why it works:
🐾 It taps into natural instincts. Shows with birds, squirrels, and other animals trigger your cat's prey drive or your dog's curiosity — in a safe, indoor way.

🐾 It provides mental stimulation. A little visual "hunting" keeps their brain active and engaged, which is great for pets who spend time home alone.

🐾 It can help with relaxation. Calming nature scenes or soothing sounds can actually help anxious pets settle down.

A few tips to make TV time work for your pet:

Everyone say hello to Dr. Skyla Johnston! 👋🏻🐾

Dr. Johnston has been with us for almost three months now — and in that short time, they've already made such an impact on our team. Born and raised in Oklahoma, they attended undergrad and vet school at Oklahoma State University. 🎓

Before joining Honnas Veterinary, Dr. Johnston spent five years working in veterinary research at Oklahoma State, followed by three years as a vet assistant in general practice and emergency. That's a foundation of experience that makes them an incredible addition to our team.

At home, Dr. Johnston has two doggos, Copper and Chaewon — who we're pretty sure are the real bosses. 🐶 Skyla’s hobbies include baking, crochet, reading, and everything K-pop.

What Dr. Johnston loves most about veterinary medicine is helping pet parents feel confident in caring for their pets. Of course, they love the animals — but they also love empowering families to give their pets the best care possible. And that's exactly the kind of vet we want on our team. 💚

Sometimes the best enrichment is free.

Window watching might look like your pet just staring into space — but to them, it’s a whole movie. Birds flying by, squirrels plotting their next move, neighbors walking dogs, leaves rustling in the wind. It’s stimulation, entertainment, and mental exercise, all from the comfort of home.

For dogs, a good window view satisfies their natural curiosity and gives them something engaging to do while you’re away.

For cats, it taps into their instinct to observe, stalk, and “hunt” — without ever leaving the windowsill.

A few tips to make window time even better:
🪟 Set up a cozy perch — a soft bed or cushion by their favorite window
🪟 Add a bird feeder outside — instant live entertainment, all day long
🪟 Keep it safe — make sure windows are secure and screens are sturdy, especially for curious kitties

This is Crowley. 🐱 And his story is exactly why we talk about pet insurance.

Crowley is a 2-year-old cat who came to us with sudden vomiting, lethargy, and weight loss. He was hospitalized, and diagnostics showed a foreign body obstruction that required immediate surgery. After surgery, Crowley recovered well — his vomiting and appetite issues resolved, and we were hopeful that was the end of it.

About a month later, Crowley was back. Same symptoms, same worry. He'd been vomiting on and off for a week despite his anti-nausea medication, wouldn't eat, and was dropping weight fast. Diagnostics again pointed to a foreign body — but with Crowley still recovering from his first surgery, we were hesitant to put him through another one so soon.

So we facilitated an emergency transfer to a hospital with endoscopy, where the foreign body was successfully removed. After four days in the hospital, Crowley finally came home. 🏠💚

Here's the part that matters: Crowley was insured as a kitten, through Trupanion's exam day offer. Within that two-month span, Trupanion paid over $20,000 toward Crowley's emergency bills — meaning his owner never had to make the impossible choice between their cat's life and their finances.

We share Crowley's story because pet insurance isn't just a policy. For families like Crowley's, it's peace of mind. It's the difference between "we can't afford this" and "let's save our pet."
