Buck showing off his skills. Here he demonstrates how he can wait at a threshold (in this case a gate) until he's released through. Once he moves through he turns to check in on his handler for direction of where to go next. This little guy is doing so well! Stay tuned to watch him learn and grow!

Enrichment doesn't have to be complicated. You can buy easy-to-fill toys that take very little time to set up yet they make a big impact on your animal's quality of life. If your budget is tight you can also DIY (as long as you ensure it is safe for your animal to interact with). I will share some DIY solutions in next post.

Here Biscuit is working on adding some distance to her Place cue. You can see it takes very little for a puppy to become distracted during a session (she's only 3 months old here); that's why we keep sessions short and productive. It's best to end on a good note so the lesson was clear rather than continue on and on until the behavior devolves. This helps the dog feel confident and remember where you left off when you come back to practice again.

Precious Milo is visiting again while his family is away. This little guy is so sweet, but he does have a history of fear-based aggression when being handled (such as during grooming or just being picked up). Thankfully, with clear communication and coordination between all his handlers, he's come a long way and appreciates us being as predictable as possible and giving him a choice, when we can, in being handled. Go Team Milo!

Millie! You've seen this sweet girl for a while now, but with the exciting news of a human baby on the way, her family is working extra hard to help her master relaxing in all the spaces in which we need her to be calm and focused. Millie gets very distracted by people (ever hopeful of some pets), but here she is with eyes on mom despite the presence of a visitor in the house. Go Team Millie!

From our recent socialization outing. M got clickes/treats for watching the world go by and for bringing her attention to me amongst many distractions.
We saw: dogs, cats, birds, guinea pigs, boxes being unloaded, shelves being stocked, etc.
We heard: dogs barking, people talking, intercom noises, cans being stacked on shelves, bird noises, bags crinkling, and more!

It is critical to socialize your puppy to the world but the important part is doing it strategically so that they are not overwhelmed throughout that process. Exposure alone ≠ socialization.
