Project Homebound Athens GA Project Homebound is a partnership between Athens-Clarke County Animal Services, Athens-Clarke County Department of Corrections, and Athenspets - GA.

This is not an official affiliated page of Athens-Clarke County and is run by volunteers of Athenspets. The Project Homebound Dog Training Program is a partnership between Athens-Clarke County Animal Services, Athens-Clarke County Department of Corrections, and Athenspets. Dogs from ACCAS are brought to live in a specialized enclosure on Corrections property. There, they are trained and socialized

by pairs of Returning Citizens under the supervision of Adriana Grassi Mosley, of Georgia Dog Trainer. Once the dogs are ready, usually after one to two months of training, they become eligible for adoption. By adopting a dog from Project Homebound, not only do you get a happy, healthy pet, but you get to help animals and people in your community!

Rolo was very shy at the shelter and it was impossible to get him to even walk on a leash there. He arrived just yesterday and is gonna need lots of confidence boosting, and luckily that is something these guys have gotten really good at.
We are excited to see how Rolo evolves over the next few weeks in the program.

First days are hard. Especially for shelter dogs. They haven’t really been asked to do anything and are often unsure of their situations.

Today we did lots of walking. Back and forth. Down the court and back again. New dogs entering the program start by learning basic leash walking. Once this is established, we can move on to the more fun stuff. So far, so good! Here you see Amsterdam and Tim-Tim.

Come out Saturday (8/15) and meet the folks and dogs behind Project Homebound! We will be at the newest Tractor Supply in Athens, GA (906 US-29, Athens, GA) from 10am-1pm. Spike, Knightly, and Lady can be seen here showing off their skills to county officials yesterday at the airport. And Saturday Amsterdam, Rampage, and Nawoofa (aka Waffles) will be joining them. Today was a remarkable day for the Project Homebound Program, as the dogs and their handlers showcased their skills before county officials in Athens, GA.
Although some dogs and handlers were a bit nervous, we couldn’t be more proud.
We are deeply grateful to the Warden of the Department of Corrections and new Director Tony Adair at Athens-Clarke County Animal Services for making this possible. A big thank you to Athenspets - GA for supporting our efforts and trusting us to continue running this program. When agencies collaborate in harmony toward a common goal, truly special things can happen. Thanks to all the officials for their warm welcome and encouragement.

A few new faces in class yesterday… Azul (leggy and lanky gray boy), Lady (petite little black girl), and Waffle (cute stocky red boy, shelter name Nawoofa), joined seasoned student Spike, in class.

First days are hard. Especially for shelter dogs. They haven’t really been asked to do anything and are often unsure of their situations.

Those first training sessions are usually filled with engagement exercises and play - things to help the dog feel connected to their handler. Once that connection happens their world opens up and gets bigger. Confidence blooms and that’s when you start to see change happening.

We are so proud of this program and the progress that continues to grow.

It’s easy to see the finished product at an adoption event - a dog walking politely on a leash, holding a stay, responding to commands.

What people don’t always see are the hours behind the scenes.

The training sessions. The repetition. The patience. The teamwork. The relationships built between dogs and handlers. The small victories that eventually become big transformations.

This is the work that makes Project Homebound so special.

Every dog deserves a chance. Every person deserves one too.

Want to see something absolutely amazing?

Meet Spike. ❤️

Yesterday, he got a chance to put all of his training to the test at Tractor Supply. With people, carts, smells, noises, and endless distractions everywhere, his handler asked him to stay while walking away down the aisle, picking up bags of food, and moving around him.

And Spike absolutely nailed it.

When Spike entered the program, he was an energetic, unfocused adolescent dog who had likely never been given much structure or guidance. Through months of consistency, patience, and dedication from his inmate handler, he has transformed into a dog who understands boundaries, trusts his person, and knows exactly what is expected of him.

Moments like this are rewarding not only because of what they show us about the dogs, but because they allow the inmates to see their hard work paying off in real time.

Spike is proof that second chances work - for dogs and people alike.

Now all he needs is a forever home. ❤️
