🐾 PATIENT SUCCESS STORY: Bella’s Brave Recovery! 🐾

Meet the beautiful Bella! 🐶 This lovely girl gave her owner (and us!) quite a scare after an adventurous walk in the woods resulted in a deep, extensive wound to her chest.

Bella’s journey to recovery was a long one, but she handled it like an absolute superstar. Here is a look behind the scenes at how our incredible nursing and vet teams got her back on her paws:

🏥 The Treatment Journey

Day 1: Emergency Surgery 🩺
Bella went straight under general anaesthetic so we could extensively clean the area. Because she was hurt in the woods, we had to carefully search under her skin to ensure no hidden remnants of sticks or debris were left behind.

Day 5: A Minor Setback 🩸
Due to the location and depth of the injury, there was always a high risk of the wound breaking down, and unfortunately, it did. Bella needed a repeat surgery to remove the damaged skin, and it was decided that the safest route to healing was to treat it as an open wound.

The Healing Process 🩹
To protect her from dirt and bacteria, Bella was fitted with a secure chest bandage. Every couple of days, she hopped back onto our clinic tables to have the bandage removed, the wound thoroughly cleaned, and a fresh wrap applied.

Our Secret Weapon: Laser Therapy! ⚡
At every single bandage change, we performed medical laser therapy on the wound to stimulate cell regeneration, reduce inflammation, and speed up the healing process.

The Turning Point 🌱
After a couple of weeks, the wound was healing so beautifully that we downsized from a massive chest bandage to just a large plaster!

🎉 Signed Off and Ready for Action!
After 4 weeks of intensive care, the plaster finally came off for good, and Bella was officially signed off by our veterinary team!

Bella was the absolute best patient throughout her entire treatment. No matter how many times she had to see us, her tail never stopped wagging. We are all so incredibly happy that she has made a full recovery! 💙🐾

🐾 PUPPY OVERLOAD ALERT! 🐾

We had the absolute pleasure of welcoming an entire litter of 10 gorgeous Alaskan Malamute puppies into the clinic recently for their first vaccinations and microchips! 🐺✨

From snoozing off their vaccine weariness to supervising the empty paper roll department, these little adventurers completely stole our hearts 💙

We are so proud of how brave all 10 pups were! They are all set up for happy, healthy adventures ahead 🦴

We’ve had a few lovely felines brought into the clinic recently as strays or lost pets where we’ve run into a roadblock: either the cat wasn't microchipped at all, or the contact details linked to the chip were out of date (old phone numbers, previous addresses).

When a lost cat arrives, scanning their chip is the very first thing we do. If those details aren't current, it makes reuniting them with their family so much harder!

Remember the legal requirements ⚖️
• It’s mandatory: Under UK law, all pet cats in England must be microchipped by the time they reach 20 weeks of age. This includes indoor-only cats!
• Up-to-date details: The law requires your contact details on the microchip database to be kept accurate and up to date.

Quick Check Checklist ✅
1. Not chipped yet? The procedure is quick, simple, and painless—just like a standard routine vaccination.
2. Moved or changed your number? Log into your chip provider’s database (e.g., Petlog, Identibase, MicroChip Central) and double-check your current details today.

If you aren't sure which database your cat is registered on or need to book a microchipping appointment, drop us a message or give the reception team a call 📞

Let's make sure your furry friends can always find their way home! 🏠💙

With a hosepipe ban in place, traditional ways to cool down our pets — like garden sprinklers or filling up large paddling pools — are off the table. But don’t worry! There are plenty of safe, water-efficient ways to keep your furry family members cool during hot weather.

Here are our top tips:

🧽 Targeted Sponge Downs
Instead of hosing down your dog, use a damp towel or sponge on their paws, underbelly, and armpits. These areas lose heat fastest!

🧊 Pawsome Frozen Treats
Freeze low-sodium pet broth, ice cubes in their water bowl, or stuff a Kong/lick mat with pet-safe peanut butter and freeze it. It keeps them hydrated and mentally stimulated indoors.

🏡 Create Shade & Drafts
Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day. Set up a fan near a damp towel to create a cool, breezy rest area, or let them lie on kitchen/bathroom tile floors.

🌁 Misting Bottles
Fill a clean spray bottle with tap water and gently mist your dog's paws or fur (if they enjoy it!). It’s super refreshing without wasting litres of water.

⏰ Walk Smart
Stick strictly to early morning or late evening walks when the ground is cooler. Remember the 5-second test: place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds — if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws!

⚠️ Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Excessive panting, heavy drooling, bright red gums, lethargy, or unsteadiness are red flags. Heatstroke is a medical emergency — if you notice any of these signs, call us immediately!

Stay cool and stay safe 💙🐾

☀️ HOT WEATHER WARNING FOR RABBIT OWNERS: Protect Your Bunnies from Flystrike! 🐰⚠️

With the recent heatwaves and warmer weather continuing, our veterinary team have unfortunately seen a recent rise in Flystrike (Myiasis) cases in our rabbit patients.

Flystrike is a painful, life-threatening emergency, but the good news is it is preventable!

🪰 What is Flystrike?
In warm weather, flies are attracted to damp fur, urine, or faeces—usually around a rabbit’s rear end. They lay eggs which hatch into maggots within hours, causing severe damage to the rabbit's skin and tissue very quickly.

🛡️ How to Protect Your Rabbit
• Check Twice Daily: Inspect your rabbit’s bottom, tail area, and belly at least twice a day. Ensure they are completely clean and dry.
• Keep Housing Spotless: Clean out soiled bedding daily during hot weather to avoid attracting flies.
• Keep Them Cool & Healthy: Ensure your rabbit isn't overweight or suffering from arthritis, as this makes it hard for them to keep themselves clean.
• Preventative Treatments: Talk to our team about veterinary-approved preventative treatments (such as rear-guard sprays) that deter flies and stop eggs from hatching.

🚨 ACT FAST: Flystrike is a medical emergency. If you spot maggots, dampness, unusual lethargy, or loss of appetite, call our surgery immediately. Do not wait!

Stay safe and cool out there, everyone! 🌡️🐾

🚨 HEATWAVE WARNING FOR CAT OWNERS 🚨

This sweet boy came inside, after being out in the heatwave, open-mouth breathing — a major sign of severe heat stress.

Unlike dogs, cats do not normally pant. If a cat is breathing with an open mouth, they are dangerously overheated. Thankfully, he immediately sought out the cold kitchen tiles to lower his body temperature and began to settle.

🐾 Signs of Heatstroke in Cats:
• Open-mouth breathing or panting
• Lethargy or weakness
• Dribbling or drooling

💡 Keep Them Safe:
• Keep cats indoors during the hottest parts of the day.
• Provide cool surfaces like tiled floors or cooling mats.
• Ensure fresh water is available in multiple rooms.

Note: If your cat is open-mouth breathing and doesn't cool down quickly, call us immediately.

Stay safe and keep those paws cool! ☀️🐾

They look innocent, but those little barbed grass seeds (foxtails) are a vet’s worst nightmare this time of year. Because of their arrow-like shape, they only move in one direction: forward. They can easily pierce your pet's skin or get inhaled up their nose, burrowing deeper and deeper.

Swipe to see what we mean! ➡️

🎥 Video 1: Our vet Kat successfully performing a delicate rhinoscopy to retrieve a pesky grass seed that had hitched a ride deep inside a patient's nasal cavity.

🎥 Video 2: The best part of the job! The wonderful Maverick getting some well-deserved belly rubs post-procedure. She is officially grass-seed-free and feeling so much better!

🛑 Signs your pet might have a grass seed:

Nose: Sudden, violent sneezing or pawing at the snout.
Paws: Continuous licking between the toes, or a sudden raised, red bump.
Ears: Head shaking, tilting, or scratching at the ear.
Eyes: Swelling, squinting, or discharge.

💡 Top Tips:

• Avoid tall, drying grass during walks.
• Do a "seed check" the second you get home—check between toes, under armpits, and inside ears.
• Keep coats trimmed, especially around the paws and ears, so seeds have less to cling to.

If you suspect your pet has picked up a grass seed, please call us right away. The sooner we find them, the easier they are to remove!

🚨 With temperatures set to skyrocket to a scorching 38°C this week, we are urging all pet owners to take extreme precautions. This level of heat is dangerous for all animals, and we need your help to keep them safe.

Please keep these critical guidelines in mind this week:

• Brachycephalic (Flat-Faced) Dogs Are At High Risk: Do not walk them at all this week, regardless of the time of day.

• The Sun Going Down Doesn't Mean It's Safe: Even after sunset, the ambient temperature and humidity will remain dangerously high, and tarmac retains heat long after dark.

• Routine Procedures Postponed: We are actively asking clients not to book flat-faced breeds for routine procedures (like nail clips or routine checks) this week. The stress of travel and the heat can trigger a respiratory crisis.

• Keep All Pets Indoors: Ensure your pets have access to shade, cool floors, fresh water, and fans. Avoid all midday walks for any dog breed.

⚠️ Signs of Heatstroke include: Heavy panting, excessive drooling, bright red or pale gums, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse.

If you suspect heatstroke, this is an immediate veterinary emergency—cool them down with damp towels and call us right away.

Please stay safe, stay indoors, and keep those paws off the hot pavement!🐾❤️
