This is Stella. She was surrendered to a charity when her health problems were more than her owners could manage. She was brought straight to us and had xrays and blood tests carried out which showed that her balance problems were due to an acute, severe parasitic infection with Encephalitozoon cuniculi. This parasite causes inflammation in various organs, particularly the brain, eye and kidneys resulting in a range of possible consequences of head tilt, loss of balance, blindness and kidney failure.
Early identification of the cause and treatment with antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory and balance regulating medications often allows for recovery, though some rabbits have permanent head tilt or balance problems that bunnies need to adjust to. Stella was at a more advanced stage of infection and was unable to stand or support herself, rolling uncontrollably when unsupported.

She was given food and water by syringe every 2 hrs day and night and gradually she figured out how to eat greens sideways. Over the following 10 days her balance started to improve until she could stand, though still with a severe head tilt, and started to move in a controlled way to get herself to food and water.

She joined the sanctuary at Shrewsbury Rabbit Rescue and is being rehabilitated with expert support, and the company of other rabbits with increased health needs. Although she wouldn't win any prizes for precision movements or sprinting, Stella can still lead a very happy life and we will continue to support her new home in giving her the best care over the coming years.

After a few months without cattle, we have cows back on the farm. The new additions are pedigree Dexters, a smaller cattle breed than our previous hefty Herefords, that will be better suited to our hilly fields, mixed pasture and woodland. They have settled in well overnight and are definitely appreciating the flush of new grass from the recent rain.

EVOLUTION EXOTICS IN THE RUNNING FOR UK NATIONAL STARTUP AWARD
Earlier this year we were crowned Professional Services StartUp of the Year at the Midlands final of the UK StartUp Awards, and will now go head to head with the best new businesses in the country at the national final. We will be representing the Midlands against the best new businesses from every nation and region of the UK, all competing for the national titles.
We started the clinic to provide care for exotic and zoo animals to the high standards that we feel they deserve. It has been a labour of love with challenges along the way, but the hard work that has been put in has achieved exactly what we were aiming for. Being named as regional winner was a huge surprise with the realisation that our personal project was being recognised as a successful business! The opportunity to attend the national finals, standing shoulder to shoulder with some incredible founders and to represent our industry and our company is slightly overwhelming but we relish the challenge!

Hot weather warning!

Meet Marmalade the duck!
She had been struggling for several months with laying eggs, getting really unwell each time she tried. Her vets were nursing her through each episode and referred her to us to see what could be done to help her longer-term.
Ultrasound showed a huge amount of fluid in her body cavity and an enlarged and abnormal o***y, suggesting yolk leakage causing a lot of inflammation internally.
Surgery was carried out to remove her oviduct and clear the yolk and inflammatory fluid. During surgery it was found that her oviduct had twisted around and stuck onto itself, which was why eggs weren't moving through properly. Although a tricky surgery, with limited space and access only possible through her air sacs, all went well and Marmalade was soon back home recovering with her human and duck flock.
Although the o***y can't be readily removed in birds, a combination of oviduct removal and hormone therapy can stop ovarian activity and should allow Marmalade to live a happy, comfortable life.
