It has been a week of little animals!
A tiny bantam chick with a toe injury, the smallest species of lemur in existence, a 40g gecko with a sore tail and the tiniest guard dog in the world introduced to our own collection of rescue animals, waifs and strays 🐣 🐭 🦎 🐕‍🦺

Vet nurse awareness month is nearly over, but we can't let it pass without acknowledging our vet nurses - the power houses that keep our practice running smoothly! Not only do they care for hospitalised patients, but they are anaesthetists, radiographers, phlebotomists, nutritionists, lab technicians and client care experts. Exotic animal medicine in particular takes a special kind of nurse who can think on their feet, show no fear and deal with any kind of patient!
Liz, our head nurse, is an expert on all things parrot, tortoise and anaesthesia and can cope calmly in any emergency situation (except when we are out of tea!). As well as managing complex clinical cases each day she oversees hospital patient care and multitasks as practice manager, keeping on top of the dull but essential aspects of rotas, ordering and scheduling meetings. 🐢 📄 ☕
Annabel works with us part time and has vast experience with companion exotics, particularly with mammal and bird hospitalisation, and has a soft spot for a stray. She is often found managing wildlife cases or kitten rearing! 🐈 🐇
A special nod to Sam as well who helps us out with complex woundcare cases ❤️

We're hiring!
We're looking to add a new vet to our team, but are struggling to find the words to explain why they'd want to join us.
Obviously we have the clear attractions:
✅ A close knit team who have fun as well as work hard
✅ The opportunity to work in the most beautiful part of the country (in our opinion!)
✅ The uplifting presence of chicks (plus lambs and piglets) and their ridiculous hilarity that makes every day cheerful
✅ A full snack cupboard thanks to our lovely clients (plus an orchard for healthier vets to pick their own!)
What else should we be passing on to new potential vets to really show them what we're about?

Time for a refreshing snack on a hot day! The oldest turkey chicks are happily tucking into a melon while they stay cool in the shade

Business as usual!
Just to reassure you all that as well as complaining about brownie deliveries and taking park in military assault courses, we are still carrying on with clinical work! This week has already seen a huge range of species visit us from budgies to Savannah cats, as well as five separate visits for zoos and inspections squeezed in around our clinic work. We're grateful to have Sara, a very experienced avian and exotics vet, helping us to keep up with the caseload and make sure we continue to provide a high standard of care for all patients even in these busy times!

Great news!
We have had safe delivery of replacement brownies! Our lovely client has arranged for a repeat delivery after DPD helped themselves to the original order. We can confirm they are indeed delicious and though we now fully understand the thievery we still cannot condone it

We survived! 10km of running, over 30 military obstacles involving swimming through swamps, jumping into pools, 12ft vertical walls, barbed wire, underground tunnels, fire and rope climbing. It has been less than ideal weather with cold, rain and winds making it even more challenging but after some food and very, very long showers we are all still standing, if a little achey!
Thanks to everyone who has donated, we are so close to hitting the target, any last minute donations to the Motor Neurone Disease Association very gratefully received! https://www.justgiving.com/page/marie-kubiak-1

Horrific crime!
It's rare that we are truly shocked and appalled. Over the years we have dealt with all kinds of harassment, repulsive smelling bodily fluids and even severe animal abuse yet we have managed to keep our cool, professional focus throughout. This however is a new low that has completely shocked us all.
We were sent a lovely, edible gift by a client who was grateful that we had performed emergency surgery late at night to save their rabbit. However, as we excitedly prepared to open the gift and smugly enjoy our reward with a hot cup of tea, we found out that we had been the victims of an awful crime. The delivery driver had apparently been just as excited as us and had taken the liberty of opening our package and helping themselves to two brownies. Not only had they stolen our snacks, but then had then untidily resealed the package as if they thought we wouldn't notice the missing treats. They foolishly underestimated us and our dedication to sweet snacks.
Rest assured we have sent a furious email to the delivery company (DPD for any hardcore vigilantes wishing to avenge this inexcusable crime) and would warn everyone to be on their guard for shifty looking delivery drivers with suspicious crumbs of chocolate brownie on their person.

Meet Callie.
This lovely bearded dragon had been taken in by a local rescue as an unwanted pet, but they soon noticed that she was a bit of an odd shape.
An ultrasound scan showed that her chunky tummy was not down to her healthy appetite, but that she had ovarian inflammation, follicle retention and fluid accumulation internally.
An emergency spay confirmed severely abnormal ovaries that had also damaged surrounding tissues including her liver and one adrenal gland which also needed surgical resection. After a slightly tricky surgery it was then found that she had ectopic ovarian tissue on her oviduct that, if left, would generate a new o***y. So she also had one oviduct removed!
120g lighter and amazingly still perky, opinionated and eating cheerfully, Callie has returned to the rescue to recover and then hopefully find her permanent home 🦎💚

This time next week Marie, Ian and Annabel will be taking part in Born Survivor, a 10km military assault course. Marie is taking part to raise money for MND Association and any donations to this great cause would be gratefully received.
Given that there has been very little training happening there is likely to be significantly more pain than gain 😂 .
We are very grateful to Liz and Sara for holding the fort at the practice next weekend while we take part and hopefully will all survive to be raring to go at work on Monday!
