BIG THANKS to the wonderful team at Hello Vet Bushey for taking such good care of me after a very worrying and painful episode with a dreaded grass seed! 😩
After my big bro Rio noticed on Monday evening that my right eye was red and gunky, and that I could barely open it, Mummy rushed me down to Hello Vet just before they were due to close on Monday evening and although the vets were busy with emergency cases, lovely vet nurse Hailey very kindly cleaned my eyes (my left eye was a bit red too) and gave me lots of TLC.
Mummy had sent a photo of my eye before leaving home and the vet had thought it was conjunctivitis at that point as there was nothing else visible - Hailey advised that if it got worse overnight, I’d need to go to the Queen Mother Hospital for Small Animals in Hatfield.
It stayed the same so when I went back to Hello Vet yesterday morning for a scheduled minor op to have a few little lumps and bumps removed, lovely vet Charlotte examined my eye and found that a grass seed had become stuck underneath my eye lid! 👀😭
So I had to be sedated to have it removed, and it was such a comfort for me and for Mummy that she could stay cuddling me until I fell asleep, and she was also there when I woke up, and it was so reassuring to have Hailey back looking after me with Charlotte who I’ve also met before - they were so kind and gentle with me. 🥰
Thank goodness there won’t be any permanent damage to my eye - Charlotte explained that the eyeball is like an onion with many layers, and that the surface will repair itself/regenerate a new layer in around 5 days. 🙏🏻
In the meantime I’m now on antibiotics (eye drops) and pain relief - and the green dye in my eye to detect the abrasions has nearly all gone, as has the gunk - and best of all, I can now open my sore eye fully again!
My op will be rescheduled as it wasn’t safe for my ulcerated eye to go ahead because I then wouldn’t be able to blink whilst under the general anaesthetic.
I just wanted to share this as a warning to you all as I don’t want any other paw pals to go through the same suffering that I did - even though my hoomans check my body for grass seeds every day, this was the one that got away/into my eye!
Its peak grass seed season - Charlotte and Hailey said that they had two other dogs come in with grass seeds stuck deep inside their ears yesterday. 😢
