Filey Bird Garden & Animal Park is a small family-run zoo on the outskirts of the popular seaside resort of Filey on the Yorkshire Coast. 🌿 Conservation in Action! 🐾

One of our keepers, Millie, has recently returned from an incredible conservation placement with SEED Madagascar where she took part in a range of vital wildlife research and education projects.

During her time in Madagascar, Millie helped set up camera traps in areas connected by wildlife corridors to monitor whether lemurs and other animals were using these important routes to move between sections of the threatened littoral forest.

She also participated in both day and night surveys, collecting data on three species of nocturnal lemur: the Mouse Lemur, Fat-tailed Dwarf Lemur, and Woolly Lemur. Researchers recorded information including tree size, tree height, distance from survey transects, and weather conditions, helping to build a better understanding of these fascinating species.

As part of the herpetology team, Millie surveyed a variety of amphibians and reptiles, recording habitat data to help researchers understand how these species use their environment.

Conservation isn't just about wildlife. Millie also visited a local school, helping to teach children about the importance of forests, why lemurs are so special, and the essential role they play in Madagascar's ecosystems.

Another highlight was assisting with Project Rufus, monitoring Madagascar flying foxes. By counting bats returning to their roost sites at dusk, the team gathered valuable information about local populations.

We're incredibly proud that Millie was able to contribute to such important conservation work and bring back valuable experience that will benefit both our animals and our visitors here at the zoo.

We're absolutely thrilled to share some exciting news... 🎉
We have been shortlisted for the 2026 Yorkshire Post Tourism Awards!
Our zoo has been named a finalist in the Small Tourist Attraction of the Year category.
This is a huge honour and recognition of the dedication, passion and hard work of our amazing staff and volunteers, as well as the incredible support we receive from our visitors, members and local community.
We're incredibly proud to be representing Filey and to be included alongside so many fantastic attractions from across Yorkshire. Good luck to all the finalists.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us on our journey. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed for the awards ceremony in November! 🤞

🦜Clapton, our Red-crested Turaco is showing off his incredible colours after a splash in the pond. Native to southern Africa, these fruit-loving birds spend most of their lives amongst the treetops. 🌳
