Happy 6️⃣th birthday to the Queen of Hearts.

If there’s one major thing Cora has taught me over the years it’s you’re never too old to try something new. From bite work to lure courses to agility to herding. Me and this girl have dabbled in a lot of different things.

Cora has been a major foundation with many dog clients of mine and if there’s one thing everyone always says is “I hope my dog can be like Cora”. We all know no two dogs are the same and we should all appreciate the dog in front of us but it always brings a smile to my face to know she’s a shining example of what relationship I want clients to have with their dogs.

One thing people sometimes forget is that I’m a dog owner before I’m a dog trainer.

Before I recommend a training method, a piece of equipment, a food, or even a management strategy, I ask myself one question: Would I be comfortable doing this with my own dogs?

If the answer is no, I’m not going to ask you to do it with yours.

My dogs aren’t just training dogs or social media content. They’re the ones I come home to every day. They’re my responsibility, and every decision I make for them is based on what I truly believe is in their best interest not what’s trending, not what’s easiest, and not what gets the most views online.

That same standard carries over into my business. Every dog that comes into my program is treated the way I would want someone to treat my own. Every recommendation I make is something I’d feel confident following if the roles were reversed.

At the end of the day, you’re trusting me with a member of your family. I don’t take that lightly, because I know exactly what it feels like to be on the other side of that trust. Which is exactly why I got into dog training.

I’m a dog owner first. Being a trainer just gives me the opportunity to help other people care for theirs the same way I care for mine. 🫶

Watching dogs swim never gets old. 🩵🌊

Eevee is just learning but is a total natural (go figure) and Cora has a bit more experience.

Things to pay attention to while having your dogs swim. Puppies get tired faster, need more encouragement, and are still figuring out how to navigate the water safely. Adult dogs can still become exhausted too, especially if they’re swimming for long periods or in moving water.

Take breaks, keep it fun, and always keep an eye on your dog. The goal isn’t to see how long they can swim, it’s to make sure they enjoy the water and build confidence every time they go out.

Also, understanding whether your dog needs a life jacket or not is something you should always look into, other than obvious signs such as low stamina, physical limitations, flat faces an easy way to tell is if their butt sinks they should have a jacket

One of the biggest mistakes people make is letting the environment become more rewarding than they are.

The water, the birds, the smells, and the excitement are all incredibly reinforcing to a puppy. If we never teach engagement, our dogs learn that everything around them is more valuable than checking in with us.

The goal isn’t to compete with the environment it’s to become part of the fun. Reward your puppy for choosing you, celebrate those check ins, and build value in working with you.

A dog that naturally wants to engage with its handler will be easier to recall, easier to train, and more enjoyable to take anywhere.

We often tell clients to work on things like hand feeding, tethering, place training, and crate time but sometimes we forget to explain what those things actually mean and why they matter.

The truth is, dog training isn’t just about teaching commands. It’s about creating habits, routines, and structure that help your dog learn how to navigate everyday life successfully.

Hand feeding isn’t simply putting food in your hand and feeding your dog. It’s using daily meals to reinforce engagement, calmness, obedience, and good choices.

Tethering isn’t about restricting your dog. It’s about teaching them how to settle, practice patience, and learn that they don’t always need to be involved in everything happening around them.

Place training helps build an off-switch. Crate time teaches rest and independence. And sometimes, the most valuable thing we can teach our dogs is how to do less.

Many behavior issues aren’t caused by a lack of exercise they’re caused by a lack of structure, boundaries, and the ability to relax.

A well-trained dog isn’t just a dog that knows commands. It’s a dog that can make good decisions, settle when needed, and confidently exist in the world around them.

🐾 Friendly reminder: small dogs need training too. 🐾

I see so many small dogs with issues but they tend to go unaddressed. Just because a dog is small doesn’t mean their behavior should be ignored. Pulling on leash, excessive barking, jumping, reactivity, poor recall, and lack of boundaries can become just as challenging in a 10-pound dog as they are in a 100-pound dog.

Training isn’t about size, it’s about communication, structure, and helping your dog navigate the world confidently.

A well trained small dog is safer, more confident, and easier to live with. Don’t let their size become an excuse to skip the training they deserve. Picking your small dog up isn’t the answer.
