Sometimes progress doesn't look like perfection.

Sometimes it looks like the dog who used to bark at everything walking calmly past a distraction.

Sometimes it looks like the dog who couldn't settle finally taking a nap while life happens around them.

Sometimes it looks like a handler who almost gave up finding the confidence to keep going.

It's easy to focus on what's left to work on.

Training has a way of making us look at the next challenge, the next goal, the next thing we want to improve.

But every once in a while, it's worth stopping and looking back.

Back at the dog who couldn't do what they're doing today. Back at the moments that felt impossible. Back at the small victories that slowly turned into big ones.

Progress isn't always loud. Most of the time it's built in quiet, ordinary moments that add up over weeks, months, and years.

So today, take a moment to appreciate how far you've come. Your dog might already be doing exactly that. 🖤🐾

City life has been a huge adjustment for Caly.

She was already dog reactive, but moving from an acreage to busy sidewalks, traffic, barking dogs, and constant stimulation has definitely tested her.

So lately we’ve been putting a lot of work into loose leash walking, engagement, and learning how to work through overstimulation instead of reacting to it.

And yes, I use tools on my own dogs.

Because when Caly becomes overstimulated, she won’t take food, struggles to process information clearly, and simply avoiding the world forever isn’t realistic. The tools help create clear communication and accountability so she can work through those moments successfully instead of spiraling through them.

The goal is never to rely on tools forever, but to eventually communicate mostly through voice, guidance, and trust.

Grizzly and Athena come along for a lot of these sessions too, because stable, neutral dogs can help teach other dogs how to slow down, regulate, and exist more calmly in the world around them.

That’s a huge part of what I do at Ohana K9.
