Building a strong foundation with a service dog puppy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every puppy comes to us with a unique background and temperament, which means their very first week will look a little different for everyone!
In these early days, our primary focus is setting our pups up for lifelong success by prioritizing a few key areas:
🔹 Confidence Building: Whether it’s getting comfortable in gear, exploring new environments, or slowly encountering novel sights and sounds, we want every experience to be positive and reassuring.
🔹 Shaping & Independent Thinking: Shaping is top priority right now! We aren't just teaching behaviours—we’re teaching our puppies how to learn. Encouraging them to offer behaviours and problem-solve builds confident, independent thinkers who love to work.
🔹 Body Conditioning & Cooperative Care: Gentle handling, paw touches, and body awareness start on day one so vet visits, grooming, and working gear feel natural and stress-free.
The golden rule for week one? Take it slow. It can be tempting to rush into formal training, but skipping steps or rushing exposure can create gaps later on. By taking our time now and building a rock-solid foundation, makes all the difference for the dogs as they enter advance training and to prepare them for service work.
Thank you to Gloryland Labradors for all the time, love, and hard work poured into him from day one to nine weeks old.
Stay tuned to see the skills he’s been working on during his very first week with us! 🐾
