This past week has been incredibly emotional.

For over a decade, Bright Eyes was a staple in Petawawa. Barb and Cindy built a hub for everything pet, two incredible women who genuinely loved animals and this community.

Just before COVID, they retired and sold. Around that same time, the pet industry here began to change. After a lot of thought, Tina and I decided Petawawa deserved something different.

And End of the Leash was born.

The five years since haven't always been easy. Behind the scenes, competition became unnecessarily hostile complaints to brands, exclusivity battles and products being pulled from us. It was toxic when it never needed to be.

Over the last few years, we also watched Bright Eyes change. We heard more concerns from customers and watched confidence disappear. That's heartbreaking in an industry that should always be about doing what's best for the animals.

Then the doors closed.

Over the last two weeks, Tina and I worked with the landlord to purchase the remaining inventory and help recover some of what was lost. It's been a HUGE undertaking. Much of it isn't something we'd ever put on our shelves, while other items will be cleared at heavily discounted prices.

But standing inside that building this week was emotional.

Because we kept thinking about what Bright Eyes originally was.

Two women who loved animals built it.

And now, two women who love animals are carrying a little piece of that story forward. 💙

We're not Bright Eyes. We're End of the Leash.

But we hope to honour the legacy Barb and Cindy created and help rebuild trust through education, honesty, quality and doing what's right for the animals we all love.

Five years ago, we believed Petawawa deserved better.

We still do.

SCENT CLASS IS BACK… and we’re testing the waters! 👃🐾
This September, we’re running one trial round of Basic Scent with Tina, who is incredibly excited to get back into the classroom and teach!
Scent work encourages dogs to use one of their most powerful natural abilities their nose! Searching for and identifying scents provides incredible mental enrichment, builds confidence and focus, and gives busy brains a productive job to do.
Fair warning: while class is one hour long, some dogs may be ready to crash after only 30 minutes of working their noses this way. Sorry, not sorry....your pups are going to be exhausted!

Five years ago, End of the Leash started with a dream to build something that was more than a pet store. We wanted to create a place where pets are family, people feel like neighbours, and our community always comes first.
To now be named a finalist for Pets Canada’s 2026 Independent Pet Retailer of the Year – Eastern Canada is something we are incredibly proud of. But we would absolutely LOVE to bring this one home to Petawawa.
