Many of us know and love that vibrating rhythmic sound our cats make. Some have a soft soothing purr, some sound like jet engine when they get going and some even drool with joy while purring.
All domestic cats purr and even some wildcats such as mountain lions and cheetah’s purr. When it comes to cats, they either purr or roar. Lions and tigers and jaguars (oh my) don’t purr they roar instead.
Purring is caused when the laryngeal muscles vibrate and air passes over them. That creates the sound and vibration of the purr.
Cats purr for different reasons. The obvious is that they are happy and relaxed. Most cat people will tell you the sound and feel of a happy purring cat on their lap is pure joy.
Kittens can start purring at just a few days old. Mom purrs to help sooth her kittens and the kittens purr to show they are happy.
Another reason cats purr is to sooth themselves when they are stressed, ill or injured. There has been research to say that purring can help to heal bones, build muscle, ease breathing, and lessen pain and swelling.
Next time your fur baby purrs you can appreciate how amazing it is!
