WHY YOU SHOULDN’T USE A HARNESS

When you use a harness on a dog it gives the dog access to its full body strength, this is an issue with most dogs, especially the larger, more powerful breeds.

A harness has a different psychological affect on a dog’s brain as opposed to a properly fitted collar or leash. A dog will want to pull when it is in a harness, it doesn’t really care if it’s a cart, a sled or their owner.

A collar or just a leash that is fitted high on a dog’s neck, just below the ears allows the owner to control the dog’s head, and wherever the head goes, the body will follow. It also stops the dog from smelling or reacting to squirrels, cats or other dogs.

When a dog is hunting they are not smelling or marking their territory, they are following their prey and waiting for the pack leader to decide who they are going to kill (the weakest, oldest or injured)

A structured walk is a great opportunity to bond with your dog because it simulates the hunt, a very primal activity for your dog.

With the smaller breeds, young dogs, or dogs that may have an issue with their necks it is recommended to use a harness.

You should check with a Veterinarian if you have any concerns.

Marvin, this very cute, and very calm. Yorkshire Terrier visited us today at Pet Valu on Carling Avenue where we were holding a FREE consultation on dog behaviour.

Marvin’s owner was concerned about his lack of house training. He was adopted a few weeks ago from the Ottawa Humane Society.

We are happy to say that we were able to give them some advice on how to deal with this very common problem.

We will be at the store today until 5 PM

Next Saturday will be at KANATA CENTRUM on June 6th, ARNPRIOR on June 7th, GANANOQUE on the 20th and June 21st will be in MANOTICK.
