Getting to Know You: A Guide for Potential Adopters

🔉🔉Please. By the time we have spoken at length, if you still have "some thinking to do", DO NOT book an appointment to view my pups. I am looking for very serious minded people that have already made a firm commitment to adopt. You have to remember, I am not only setting aside my time, but inviting complete strangers into my home. This is a privilege that should not be taken lightly.🔉🔉

To ensure the best possible match, I love getting to know the families interested in my pet puppies. If your ENTIRE FAMILY IS ONBOARD, and you have a specific puppy chosen, please include answers to the following questions in your initial private message:

1. Tell me about yourself and your family: Who lives in your home? Please provide a brief overview of your family dynamics (e.g., adults, children, and their ages).
2. Do you have other pets? If so, please tell me about them, including their breeds, ages, and temperaments.
3. What is your experience with dogs? Specifically, have you owned or cared for toy breeds before?
4. What is your home environment like? Do you live in a house, apartment, or condo?
5. Do you have a secure outdoor space?
6. What is your daily routine?
7. How much time are you able to dedicate to a puppy's care, training, and socialization?
8. What is your lifestyle? Is someone home during the day, or would the puppy be spending significant time alone?
9. Why a Chihuahua? What draws you to the breed, and why do you feel a Chihuahua is the right fit for your current lifestyle?
10. Is the entire household onboard with bringing a new furry family member into the fold?

Sharing these details ensures every little one finds their ideal lifelong family. ❤️

I AM A BREEDER

Food receipts for my dogs food bills far surpass our own grocery bills.

I have more whelping supplies than I do medicine and first aid supplies.

I have vaccines in my fridge, ringers on hand, my vet on speed dial and multiple puppy pens in my living room.

I am a breeder, who when bad weather strikes, save the dogs/puppies before taking cover myself. My feet find the way to the puppy pens before I have even eaten breakfast in the morning and the puppy pens are my last stop before bed.

Personal plans revolve around delivering or hand feeding puppies. They are made around heat dates, whelp dates, puppies going to their new homes and vet dates.

I am a breeder, who has been covered in more bodily fluids from my dogs on more occasions than I care to admit.

Most of the time my conversations with friends revolves around my dogs.

When I get exhausted and feel like I can't do another sleepless night hand feeding a puppy around the clock every 2 hours I remind myself religiously that the hand feeding is only temporary and the reward is coming.

I am a breeder who sacrifices my own sanity and rest to wake up every hour to check on a dam in labor, or soon to be.

Many people wouldn't understand how it feels to have invested hours upon hours into a weak puppy to ultimately lose it and how it can feel the same as losing a loved one or the joy I feel when all the invested hours have paid off in one that lives.

I am a breeder, who has bottle fed, syringe fed and even sponge fed a puppy, doing whatever it takes feeding every 2 hours and it taking 45 minutes to do it for weeks at a time to ensure it's survival.

I have learned to be proficient at vaccinations, sub- q fluids, syringe feeding, , temperature taking and formulated and perfected my own puppy formula.

Working out natural, well working, remedies to just about every puppy issue , like canned pumpkin for constipation or loose poop's.

My Vet knows me by my first name, and has witnessed me cry countless times.

I am a breeder, to me that 63 days takes on new meaning still excited by every new life. It is I who delivers all my pups, towels and heating pads on ready, happiness and sadness sometimes intermingled.

It is I who has breathed the first breath of life into a puppy who has refused to take that first breath. Even though it increases my work load, I look forward to the 14 day stage when eyes open, and puppies begin to emerge from the helplessness of newborns.Puppy breath, a first bark, and a heart of exploration. I am a conscientious lover of animals and I have found my niche.

I am a breeder, and I am not cruel, dumb, uncaring or criminal. I take great responsibility for every life I bring into this world and ensure it goes to a wonderful, loving and perfect home. An extension of the same love and care they received while in my own home.

I am not raking in money while sitting on my butt. Every penny I make I earn through blood, sweat, hard work and tears. My greatest joy is a healthy puppy going to a wonderful home.

The cards of thanks, gifts from clients and the pictures of my puppies with their new families are the fringe benefits of my efforts.
I am an animal lover, nurse, midwife, heavy laborer, customer service representative and marketer and PROUDLY I AM A BREEDER!

Reminder. No lepto vaccine!!! 🚫 All small dog and puppy owners need to read this article.

The Lepto Vaccine
For owners of toy breeds—such as Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Yorkies, and Maltese—the decision to administer the Leptospirosis (Lepto) vaccine is often met with significant caution. Many breeders and small-dog advocates argue that for these tiny companions, the potential for severe adverse reactions far outweighs the likelihood of infection.
The following article outlines the specific risks and lifestyle factors that make the Lepto vaccine a point of concern for toy breed owners.
The Danger of Adverse Reactions
The primary argument against the Lepto vaccine in toy breeds is its high rate of Vaccine-Associated Adverse Events (VAAEs). Small dogs are physiologically more vulnerable to vaccine reactions than large breeds, and the Lepto shot is frequently cited as one of the most "reactive" injections in veterinary medicine.
* Hypersensitivity and Anaphylaxis: Toy breeds are at a statistically higher risk for Type I hypersensitivity. This can manifest as facial swelling, hives, and acute vomiting, or escalate to life-threatening anaphylactic shock shortly after the injection.
* The Dosage Disparity: Currently, vaccines are not weight-adjusted. A 4-lb Yorkie receives the exact same volume of antigen and chemical adjuvants as a 120-lb Mastiff. This creates a massive over-stimulation of the toy dog's immune system, which many believe leads to systemic inflammation.
* Localized Vasculitis: In small breeds, the Lepto vaccine has been linked to localized vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels) at the injection site. In tiny dogs, this can result in permanent focal alopecia (hair loss) or skin necrosis.
Why it is Often Unnecessary
For many toy dogs, the actual risk of contracting Leptospirosis is virtually zero, making the dangerous side effects of the vaccine an unnecessary gamble.
* Low-Risk Lifestyles: Leptospirosis is typically spread through the urine of wildlife in standing water, marshlands, or soil. Most toy breeds live strictly indoor lives, walk on city pavement, and are rarely—if ever—exposed to the rural or suburban environments where the bacteria thrive.
* Limited Strain Coverage: There are over 250 known "strains" (serovars) of Leptospirosis. Most vaccines only cover four. If a dog is exposed to a strain not included in the shot, they remain unprotected despite having taken the risk of the injection.
* Short-Term Efficacy: Unlike core vaccines (like Rabies or Parvo) which can provide years of protection, the Lepto vaccine requires annual or even bi-annual boosters. This subjects a small dog to the cumulative risk of a reaction every 12 months for a disease they are unlikely to encounter.
Hidden Risks: The Cumulative Effect
Toy breeds often face "vaccine fatigue" because their small bodies struggle to process multiple antigens simultaneously.
* Combination Shot Dangers: The Lepto vaccine is frequently bundled into a "7-way" or "5-way" combo shot (DHLPP). Research suggests that the more antigens given at once, the higher the risk of a reaction. For a tiny dog, the addition of the Lepto component to a standard booster can be the tipping point for the immune system.
* Autoimmune Concerns: There is ongoing concern among some holistic veterinarians and breeders that the aggressive adjuvants used in the Lepto vaccine may trigger long-term immune-mediated diseases in genetically predisposed small breeds.

Protecting Your Toy Breed
If you choose to decline the Lepto vaccine based on these risks, you can minimize environmental exposure by:
* Avoiding stagnant water or puddles during city walks.
* Ensuring your yard is free of rodent attractants.
* Focusing only on "core" vaccines (Rabies, Distemper, Parvo) that offer long-term protection with fewer boosters.

Hypoglycemia. A MUST READ for new puppy owners!!

Hypoglycemia, or critically low blood sugar, is one of the most serious medical emergencies facing toy dog breeds like Chihuahuas, Yorkshire Terriers, and Pomeranians. Because toy puppies and small adults have very little body mass, limited muscle glycogen reserves, and immature livers, they cannot efficiently store or regulate glucose. When their small bodies experience stress, exhaustion, a skipped meal, or a chill, their blood sugar can plummet with frightening speed.

What to Look For: Symptoms of Hypoglycemia

Recognizing the early warning signs allows you to intervene before the situation becomes life-threatening. Watch closely for:
* Sudden weakness, lethargy, or extreme listlessness
* A blank stare, disorientation, or appearing drunk or uncoordinated
* Muscle trembling, shivering, or twitching
* A wobbly gait or an inability to stand
* Cool body temperature (hypothermia)
* Stiffening of the limbs, pale gums, seizures, or loss of consciousness in advanced stages
Immediate Action: What to Do Right Away

If a toy breed shows signs of an impending crash, you must act without hesitation.
🐾Administer a Fast-Acting Sugar Source:
💥Rub a small amount of **corn syrup, maple syrup, or a sugary gel (like Nutri-Cal) directly onto their gums. Karo syrup is a staple for toy breed owners because it absorbs almost instantly through the mucous membranes into the bloodstream.
🚫Avoid Honey: Do not use honey. Honey can actually cause blood sugar levels to drop even lower in some toy breeds due to how its specific sugars metabolize, making it an unsafe choice in an acute emergency.
🥵 Warm Them Up: Wrap the dog in a warm blanket while administering the sugar to help stabilize their body temperature.
⏳️ Monitor the Response: Most responsive puppies will begin to perk up within one to two minutes. Once they are alert, follow up with a high-protein, easily digestible meal or some puppy food to maintain their blood sugar levels.

When to Seek Emergency Veterinary Care!!
👉 If your pup does not snap out of the lethargy quickly, or if the symptoms improve temporarily and then return, you must rush them to a veterinarian immediately!!
👉 When you arrive, explicitly tell the veterinary staff that you suspect acute hypoglycemia.
💥 Never assume a clinic will spot it automatically; sadly, some veterinary professionals fail to recognize the subtle or rapid presentation of low blood sugar in toy breeds, leading to dangerous diagnostic delays. A vet can administer an intravenous (IV) dextrose solution to safely stabilize the dog's blood chemistry.

👇How to Avoid Hypoglycemia
PREVENTION is always the best defense against blood sugar crashes. You can protect your toy breed by following these daily management steps:
🐾Free Feeding: All very young puppies should be free fed and always have water and food available to them so they can eat whenever they need to maintain their energy levels.
🐾 Stress and Fatigue Management: Limit intense play sessions, excessive handling by strangers, or long periods of cold exposure, as stress and physical exertion rapidly burn through glucose.
🐾 Keep Emergency Supplies Handy
Always keep a bottle of corn syrup and Nutrical on hand near your puppy's pen and in a travel bag so you never get caught unprepared. Having these critical supplies instantly accessible can make all the difference in an emergency situation.
🐾 Print this information so you can refer to it quickly!!

* Bave abondante ou salivation épaisse et mousseuse
* Secousses vigoureuses de la tête, coups de patte sur la bouche ou gémissements
* Gencives et muqueuses rouge vif ou enflammées
* Vomissements ou haut-le-cœur
* Perte de coordination, trébuchements ou faiblesse
* Difficultés respiratoires ou rythmes cardiaques anormaux
* Tremblements musculaires, spasmes rigides ou convulsions
* Effondrement et perte de conscience
