Emergency Fundraiser for Bentley: A No Surrender Ottawa Client

Yesterday, Bentley, one of our beloved client dogs, suffered a sudden collapse due to suspected toxicity of unknown origin. He’s been diagnosed with grade 2 kidney and liver damage and is currently undergoing life-saving treatment. Thankfully, Bentley is awake, alert, and even eating this morning. However, his vet bills are skyrocketing, and No Surrender Ottawa is under massive financial strain. Having already been to the emergency vet with another client dog who suffered a dog attack, the financial
and emotional strain has been massive.

Letting Bentley die was not an option. We are doing everything we can to save him, but we urgently need your help. If you’re able, please consider donating using one of the options below. Every share of this post also makes a huge difference.

Together, we can help Bentley on his road to recovery. Thank you for your support.

With two veterinary emergencies this weekend, No Surrender OttawaNo is struggling under the financial burden. This is an emergency fundraiser to quickly get some very high vet bills covered. If you are able to help please click on the gofundme link in the post.

*** URGENT ***
A weekend involving two trips to the emergency vet is not a good weekend.

One of our lovely client dogs had to get injuries stitched up overnight; another collapsed earlier today, suddenly unable to move, and is still at the vet, awaiting an EKG.

The cost adds up to $3000…and counting.

With our ordinary expenses already scraping the bottom of the financial barrel, our volunteers have been paying for veterinary expenses out of pocket—and this is way more than we can absorb. We urgently need your help to support a couple of good, gentle boys and the people who love them so dearly.

Any funds you can contribute would be so very greatly appreciated. We've set up a GoFundMe at https://gofund.me/cc6ab566 , and we also gratefully accept donations by etransfer (to [email protected] ) or by PayPal ( https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=CSYSXF2SCZM4J ).

I’m always up for a challenge!

Sweet Scarlett is one of the most allergic dogs I have come across in nearly 30 years.

What do you do when a dog is allergic to almost all novel proteins and many grains?

If you have a dog like Scarlett, reach out. I’m here to help and have some available client spots open at the moment!

Please share our important PSA!

Safe Wings Ottawa as an organization is not the only rescue organization run solely by volunteers — but we are the only volunteer organization in Ottawa dedicated to helping orphaned and injured birds in need 🐦💕

Being aggressive and abusive means fewer volunteers willing to help and less volunteers means less birds saved!

We know finding an injured bird in need of care can be stressful but please know that each volunteer will do their best to find the best solution for each case.

Please be kind, patient and understanding. We want to help as many birds as we can across Ottawa-Gatineau.

To learn more about our work please visit Safewings.ca 🐦❤️

Remember the little guys in this heat wave.

Consider putting out a shallow water bowl with pebbles and sticks in it, above the waterline so bugs can climb out.

They will thank you for it.

Heatstroke in Dogs: Signs, Treatment, and Prevention
Signs of Heat Stroke in Dogs

Heat stroke is a serious condition that occurs when a dog's body temperature rises to dangerous levels. Here are the key signs to watch for:

· Excessive panting or difficulty breathing.
· Increased heart rate and pulse.
· Drooling and salivation.
· Lethargy or weakness.
· Confusion or disorientation.
· Bright red gums and tongue.
· Vomiting and diarrhea.
· Collapse or unconsciousness.
· Seizures (in severe cases).

What to Do If Your Dog Has Heatstroke

Immediate action is crucial to prevent serious damage or death.

· Move to a Cool Area: Get your dog out of the heat and into a shaded or air-conditioned area.

· Offer Water: Let your dog drink small amounts of cool (not cold) water. Do not force water into their mouth.

Cool Your Dog Down:
· Use cool (not cold) water to wet your dog’s body, especially on the head, neck, and underbelly.

· Place wet towels over their body and fan them to increase evaporation.

· Avoid ice or very cold water, which can constrict blood vessels and slow the cooling process.

Monitor Body Temperature: Use a re**al thermometer to check your dog's temperature. Stop cooling when it reaches 103°F (39.4°C) to avoid hypothermia.

Seek Veterinary Care: Even if your dog appears to be recovering, getting them to a vet is essential as soon as possible.

What Not to Do

· Do Not Use Ice Water: Extremely cold water can cause blood vessels to constrict, preventing the cooling process.

. Do Not Force Your Dog to Drink: If your dog is not conscious or unwilling to drink, do not force water into its mouth, as it could lead to choking or aspiration.

· Do Not Ignore Symptoms: Always seek veterinary attention even if your dog seems to improve after initial cooling.

Naturopathic Treatment

While immediate cooling and veterinary care are critical, some naturopathic measures can support your dog’s recovery and overall well-being:

· Electrolyte Solutions: Natural electrolyte solutions like coconut water (in small amounts) can help restore hydration and balance.

· Herbal Remedies: Herbs like dandelion (diuretic) and licorice root (anti-inflammatory) can be helpful but should be used under the guidance of a holistic vet.

· Aloe Vera: Applying aloe vera gel to your dog’s skin can help cool and soothe their body.

· Acupressure: Gentle acupressure on cooling points (such as GV 14, located between the shoulder blades) might help reduce body temperature.

When to Go to the Vet

· Immediately if your dog is showing any signs of heatstroke.
· If symptoms persist or your dog’s condition does not improve with initial cooling measures.
· For follow-up care, to ensure there are no lasting effects such as organ damage.

Prevention Tips

· Avoid exercise during hot weather, especially in the middle of the day.
· Provide plenty of fresh water and shade.
· Use cooling vests or mats during hot weather.
· Never leave your dog in a parked car, even with the windows down.

Recognizing the signs of heatstroke and knowing how to respond can save your dog's life. Always prioritize your dog's safety in hot weather, and consult your immediately if your dog is suffering from heatstroke.
