Pre-walk ritual with BONNIE BEAN

When you have real control and understanding with a dog…

You don’t always need to go out the door first..

Or wait 10 minutes for them to be calm before leaving the house…

You just go.. and they are on the same page as you.

Doing 100 little obedience drills daily will not stop reactivity..

Or teach a dog 100% reliable recall…

Or improve their overall disposition and feelings about the world around them.

And this is after an hour off leash in the morning and playing with each other on and off all day by the way.

Some dogs are next level.

Not a better level.

Or a more “real” dog level.

But definitely a different experience from many other breeds and personalities of dogs.

You have to enjoy and lean into the chaos, intensity and demand on your time and energy.

It’s not for everyone. And that’s ok.

My breeds of choice are not this.

I like a quieter, composed, less twitchy and intense demeanours.

The “cat-like” breeds.

I have never been a high-energy athlete who would go on a break-neck pace bike ride at the crack of dawn or twilight by choice.

But I can love this for them.

Because this is who they are and what they need.

And they don’t choose where they end up… so we owe it to them.

The average walk in the suburbs on a nice weekend evening.

Stella completed training two months ago for her reactivity to people and dogs.

Kona completed training last September for reactivity and aggression to people, dogs, and certain vehicles/bikes.

Appa the shiba is chill and has always been social. He came along for the ride.
