Allergy season can be difficult to navigate if your pet is suffering from symptoms. Scratching, skin rashes, red/itchy ears can be a few signs that your pet might have seasonal allergies. Apoquel and Zenrelia are very common oral medications that are prescribed by veterinarians. These medications help reduce symptoms, allowing your pet to enjoy life while allergy season tries to take the fun away. Apoquel and Zenrelia can also be used all year round as recommended by the veterinarian.

Over the counter Antihistamines ( Benadryl, Reactine, Claritin. etc) can be beneficial for short term use if used properly. Always use the generic formula, check ingredients for Xylitol or decongestants (as they are highly toxic to animals) and always contact your veterinarian for proper dosing. Antihistamines can be used for minor allergic reactions like insect stings or hives.

Sunshine, heat waves and summer vacation means hours spent in the water. Swimming is fun and a great way to keep cool, however, ear infections, skin infections and water toxicity can make it less enjoyable.

Ear infections are very common in our floppy ear dogs. When water is in them and isn't cleaned, the moisture can cause your pet to have; red, itchy, dirty, smelly ears. It is best to keep them clean and dry.

Skin infections can be caused when your pet doesn't dry thoroughly and moisture gets trapped under the fur. This can cause hot spots and other complications. Be sure to dry your pet thoroughly after swimming.

Water toxicity can occur when a dog ingests too much water. Diving and swimming with an open mouth can cause them to ingest water at high volumes. Playing in a sprinkler or trying to catch water from a garden hose can lead to the same outcome. Limit the time they spend in/around water in order to keep them safe from water toxicity.

Due to the wildfires across Ontario and Quebec, Environment Canada has issued an air quality warning. This warning applies to our pets as well. Senior pets and animals with respiratory issues are at higher risk of being affected by poor air quality. Keep your pet healthy by limiting times spent outdoors, keeping windows closed and using air purifiers if possible.

HEAT WARNING!! We are expected to have a hot summer. This can be extremely dangerous for pets. Heat stroke can happen within minutes and can be fatal. Signs of heat stroke are: lethargy, heavy panting, elevated heart rate, vomiting and diarrhea. If you notice any of these signs it is best to bring them to an emergency animal hospital as soon as possible.

Sidewalks and pavement are very hot! Prevent your pets paws from burning by keeping them on the grass and minimizing the time they spend outside during peak heat hours.

NEVER leave your pet in the car. Temperatures in the vehicle will rise up to 10 degrees more than outside within several minutes.

Fireworks are fun but they can be scary for our pets. Loud noises and flashing lights can cause them to be frightened. Safety precautions include: creating a safe soothing environment by putting on white noise or tv sounds, keeping them away from windows, keeping your pet inside, and having a collar with a name tag on to prevent lost pets.
