After almost a year of trying every trap and trick in the book mama was finally secured!

Mama was stubborn but keeper Janie Cyr has a determination that out weighed mama’s will.

Even tho Meet the keepers generously offered to pay for mama’s spay and vetting we at Speak Up For Paws 🐾 will be stepping up to cover the cost.

YES JANIE IT’S HAPPENING THERE WILL BE NO ARGUING ABOUT IT 🤨

MAMA HAS BEEN CAUGHT! ❤️

It took us an entire year of setting traps, patience and persistence—but today, we finally caught Mama!

When we moved a year ago, we trapped her first litter of three and had them sterilized, then later managed to catch her second litter. But Mama continued to outsmart us every single time.

Janie the Keeper has spent the last few weeks slowly gaining her trust, getting closer and closer—and today, a quick scruff finally did the trick!

Mama is now safe in our care and will be spayed within the next 48 hours!

A HUGE shoutout to our friend Jackie Gauthier for all of her pointers, advice and help along the way. ❤️

Most importantly, the cycle of unnecessary reproduction ends TODAY!

One mama. Two litters. A year of trying. No more kittens. ❤️🐾

It’s turtle hatching season!

Here are a few important tips to remember incase you come across babies or a nest.

It is generally best to let baby snapping turtles make the trip to the water themselves as long as they aren’t in immediate danger. Their little journey actually serves a purpose:

• They orient themselves to their environment. Hatchlings instinctively use light, slope, moisture, vegetation and other environmental cues to locate suitable habitat. Allowing them to navigate naturally lets those behaviours play out rather than placing them somewhere humans assume is best.

• The closest water isn’t necessarily their intended destination. Snapping turtles may head toward ponds, wetlands, marshy edges, streams, or other suitable habitat. A person can accidentally put a hatchling into water that isn’t where it was trying to go.

• They choose how and where to enter. A hatchling approaching naturally can enter through shallow vegetation or cover. Dropping one directly into open/deep water can leave it exposed to fish, birds, and other predators.

• It’s part of natural dispersal. Not every hatchling necessarily follows exactly the same route. Allowing them to disperse naturally helps them find different microhabitats and reduces the chance of humans concentrating an entire nest in one spot.

• Handling is an unnecessary stressor. They’re tiny and vulnerable. If they’re already moving in the right direction and aren’t threatened, there’s usually no benefit to picking them up. If you must move them, do so gently by holding the sides of their shell. Bring them in the direction they were going, and place them somewhere out of sight (never directly in the water).

There are times when helping is appropriate especially if they have to cross a busy road, parking lot, busy walking path, fence or another dangerous obstacle. In that situation, you can move them a short distance in the direction they were already travelling, place them somewhere safe, and let them continue from there.

All this to say, if it isn’t scorching hot, if there isn’t a lot of traffic, and they seem healthy and moving, let the turtles do their thing. 🐢💚

Maybe take a moment to sit and watch such a special moment! You can essentially be their little crossing guard, keep people, dogs and onlookers away while they make the journey.
