Meet Nora, our Olde English Bulldog, who is ready to hit the books and remind us that dogs can go to school too! 🐶📚

September is a great time to brush up on your dog’s training. Whether you have a brand-new puppy or a seasoned senior, training is a wonderful way to build communication, confidence, and a stronger bond between you and your pup.

Sit, stay, and come when called
Walking nicely on leash
Leave it and drop it
Calm greetings with people and other dogs

September is National Pain Awareness Month, a great reminder that our pets can experience pain too—but they often hide it well. ❤️‍🩹

As pet parents, it’s important to know the subtle signs that may indicate your pet is uncomfortable. Changes in behaviour, posture, appetite, mobility, sleep, grooming, or interaction can all be clues.

🐶🐱 Did you know there are pain and grimace scales that can help?
The Glasgow Composite Pain Scale and Feline Grimace Scale are tools that veterinary teams can use to help assess pain based on observable behaviours and facial expressions.

Some signs to watch for include:

Squinting or changes around the eyes
Flattened or altered ear position
Tension around the muzzle
A hunched or unusual posture
Reluctance to move, jump, climb stairs, or play
Changes in appetite or normal behaviour
📸 Tip for pet parents: If you notice something unusual, take a photo or short video of your pet at home. These can be incredibly helpful for your veterinary team when assessing changes in behaviour or mobility.

Let’s talk about something we hope you’ll never need — but will be so glad you have if the unexpected happens.

Accidents and illnesses don’t tend to happen at convenient times. They often happen when the mortgage is due, an appliance has just broken, or you’ve already booked and paid for your vacation. 😩💸

Pet insurance can help take some of the financial worry out of unexpected veterinary care, allowing you to focus on getting your pet the care they need rather than worrying about how you’re going to manage the cost.

The pet insurance industry is constantly evolving, and some companies now offer direct pay options, which can make managing the cost of an emergency visit a little more manageable.

There are several pet insurance companies and plans to choose from, and there is no one plan that will be the perfect fit for every pet or every budget. Coverage, exclusions, deductibles, reimbursement options, waiting periods, and premiums can vary significantly.

🐾🦴 Let’s Chat About Osteoarthritis in Our Pets!

Did you know that osteoarthritis (OA) can begin long before we notice obvious signs of pain or stiffness? Our pets are incredibly good at hiding discomfort, which means changes can be happening in their joints while they still appear perfectly normal.

🐶 In dogs: OA can begin surprisingly early, particularly in dogs with joint abnormalities, previous injuries, or certain breed-related conditions early disease may have few or no noticeable symptoms.

🐱 In cats: OA is extremely common and often underdiagnosed. Studies have found radiographic evidence of joint changes in more than half of cats over 6 years old, and the prevalence increases significantly with age. Many cats with these changes show little to no obvious outward signs.

So, just because your pet isn’t limping or crying out in pain doesn’t mean their joints are perfectly healthy. ❤️

You might eventually notice your pet:

🐾 Taking longer to get up or lie down
🦴 Walking stiffly, especially after resting
🛋️ Hesitating to jump onto furniture or use stairs
💤 Sleeping more or being less interested in play
🚶 Going for shorter walks or tiring more easily
😾 Becoming less tolerant of handling
🧼 Grooming less or having difficulty keeping themselves clean
⚖️ Gaining weight as activity decreases

And with cats in particular, subtle changes matter. Jumping less, using a lower surface to get somewhere, sleeping more, or being less interested in play may be signs of discomfort rather than simply “getting older.”
The good news? Getting ahead of joint disease can make a big difference. 🩵

There are many ways we can help support your pet’s mobility and comfort, including weight management, appropriate exercise, environmental modifications, pain management, rehabilitation, and other individualized treatment options.

🚗🐶 Pet Safety Tip: Keep Your Pup Safely Inside the Car!

We know how much dogs love sticking their heads out the car window — ears flapping, nose working overtime, and enjoying all those exciting smells! But as adorable as it looks, letting your dog’s head or face hang out the window can be dangerous.

Here’s why:

⚠️ Accidental window closure — Your dog could accidentally step on the window button and become trapped as the window closes.

⚠️ Jumping or falling out — Even a moment of excitement can lead a dog to jump or fall from a moving vehicle.

⚠️ Eye and face injuries — Rocks, dirt, insects, and other debris can strike your dog in the face or eyes and cause serious injury.

⚠️ Stress for others — A dog barking aggressively at people, cyclists, or other dogs from the car can be frightening or stressful for those passing by. For puppies especially, repeated reactions like this can work against positive training and socialization.

And one more important reminder: Your dog should never ride on your lap while you’re driving. 🚫🐾

It may seem like a sweet way to keep your pup close, but it’s incredibly dangerous. A dog on your lap can interfere with your ability to safely control the vehicle, and in the event of a collision, your pet could suffer catastrophic or fatal injuries.

🐾 Safer car rides = happier car rides!
Keep your dog securely restrained inside the vehicle using an appropriate crash-tested harness, travel carrier, or secured crate. Keep windows closed enough that your dog cannot get their head or body through them.

The best view from the car is the one where your pup arrives safely at their destination! 💙🐶🚗

🐱💕 Does Your Cat Want to Stay an “Only Child”?

Thinking about adding another furry friend to your household? While you may be excited about giving your cat a companion, your solo cat may not be quite as enthusiastic! 😹

Many cats are perfectly happy being the one and only. Bringing a new pet into their territory can be a big adjustment, so it’s important to take things very slowly and let your cat set the pace.

Before adding another pet, consider:

🐾 Your cat’s personality — Is your cat confident and social, or easily stressed and very attached to their routine?

🐾 Age and energy level — A playful kitten may be overwhelming for a senior or laid-back cat.

🐾 Space and resources — Cats need places to retreat, hide, climb, eat, sleep, and use the litter box without feeling they have to compete.

🐾 Your expectations — Success doesn’t necessarily mean your cats become best friends! Peaceful coexistence is a win. ❤️

🐾 Tips for a smoother introduction
🏠 Start with separate spaces. Keep the new pet in their own room at first, with everything they need. Don’t rush face-to-face introductions.

👃 Let them get used to each other’s scent. Swap bedding or use a clean cloth to transfer scents between the pets before allowing them to meet.

🚪 Gradually introduce visual contact. Once everyone is comfortable with the scents, allow them to see each other from a safe distance, such as through a baby gate or cracked door.

🍗 Make it positive. Treats, meals, play, and praise can help your cats associate the other pet with good things.

🐌 Go at their pace. If you see hissing, growling, hiding, staring, swatting, or other signs of stress, take a step back and slow things down.

⏰ Be patient! Introductions can take days, weeks, or even months. Rushing the process can create unnecessary stress and make the transition more difficult.

And remember: your cat doesn’t have to have a feline friend to be happy. Some cats truly prefer being the only cat in the household — and that’s perfectly okay! 🐱👑
