AN UPDATE ON BERT ❤️
First off, we want to apologize to anyone who genuinely believed Bert was going to be euthanized.
Unfortunately, in rescue, we’ve learned that when something needs to happen urgently, people often won’t click, read, or share unless there’s something to be angry about. Rage bait gets attention, while dogs desperately needing help are overlooked every single day.
We want to make something very clear. Our rescue does NOT believe in euthanasia unless it is an absolute last resort, after every other reasonable option has been exhausted.
Now, for the good news!
BERT IS IN ALBERTA! ❤️
Bert was originally posted on September 24th when we were desperately searching for a flight angel to get him out of Nova Scotia. Unfortunately, as time went on, his behaviours continued to progressively worsen. Despite everyone’s best efforts, Bert simply wasn’t thriving in a kennel environment, and it became increasingly important to get him somewhere that could better accommodate his needs.
Bert has now made his way to Alberta and is in the care of our behavioural coordinator.
At this time, Bert will be working with a trainer to address his behavioural challenges, and we are also considering a board-and-train program if we feel it would be beneficial for him. Our priority is giving him the structure, consistency, and support he needs to succeed.
We also want to give a HUGE shoutout to Dogwood Lodge Pet Retreat in Nova Scotia.
These people are absolutely incredible. They took wonderful care of a boy who was essentially dumped on them, and they went above and beyond for him. If we were located anywhere remotely close, we would absolutely use their services again without hesitation.
Please go show them some love. They deserve the recognition and support. ❤️
We also want to make it clear that Bert’s behavioural challenges are absolutely no reflection of the care he received at Dogwood. Some dogs simply cannot cope with a kennel environment long-term, regardless of how wonderful the facility or staff are.
Bert’s situation is also a prime example of a much bigger problem.
BACKYARD BREEDING NEEDS TO STOP.
Not just in Alberta. Not just with Bull Terriers. Across Canada, with EVERY breed.
Dogs are being bred, sold, passed around, surrendered, and abandoned when people realize they’re more work than anticipated. Meanwhile, rescues, fosters, boarding facilities, and volunteers are left trying to pick up the pieces.
Bert didn’t ask for any of this.
He’s a young dog who deserves stability, understanding, and a home willing to put in the work. And that’s exactly what we’re going to continue fighting to find for him.
If you’re in Alberta, or know anyone who is, PLEASE share Bert’s story. We want to get this boy the exposure he deserves and ultimately find him the right forever home.
And please, support the people and businesses who step up for rescue dogs. Places like Dogwood make an enormous difference, especially to small rescues like ours.
