Everyone meet this outstanding gentleman Kenny Smart 👏
Kenny is the one responsible for my love of training gun dogs. He helped me out in the early days training Bethany and my 2 jack Russell's as champion terrier racers.
Its great to see you out there still enjoying what you love Kenny! Big hug from across the ditch!
A day on the hill with Kenny and quite a partnership at work.
His German Shorthaired Pointer is an extraordinary dog to watch, working the hill on scent, trained to point when he finds his birds and then flush on command. Alongside him, Kenny’s Springer Spaniel takes care of the retrieving. Two very different jobs, two very different dogs, and a wonderful example of what good training can produce.
There are few better ways to spend a Highland day. Sun on your back, good company, dogs working ahead and plenty of miles under your boots. We covered 8.6 miles across the hill, with a good “piece” at lunchtime and a swig of local sloe gin to keep us going.
And at the end of it all, something genuinely wild, fresh and local for the dinner table. Eating seasonally is something we should perhaps all do a little more of, and there can be few better examples than game taken from the hill and enjoyed when it is at its best. There is a satisfying simplicity to knowing exactly where your food has come from and having spent the day in the landscape that produced it.
Good dogs, good company, a good walk and supper to show for it. Hard to beat.
