In 2010, amongst many other kittens that l rescued and fostered, l handreared a tiny, 2 day old black and white female kitten.
She was unwell, weak, scrawny, and had respiratory issues. Everytime l pulled the blanket back to get her out for a bottle feed, l was sure l would find her gone. But l did'nt.
She was so determined to live, so scrappy.
I called her Winky (Wee W***y Winky) and that became Winky Potpie.
I, of course, kept her.
When she was 6 months old, she still fit into one hand (Winky never got bigger than 3kg in body weight). I have been very lucky to always have had very affectionate, loving cats. However Winky was exceptional. She adored me. And l her. She really looked at me. We communicated. And she was so funny, definitely a cat with sense of humour.
Winky passed away yesterday at nearly 16 years old. The loss is immense. I struggle to see a world without her in it, and l will miss her always.
I will be forever grateful to that tiny kitten, for fighting so hard to stay with me, so long ago.
RIP my sweet girl.
Lyn, Winkys Mum.
