And the award for most stylish pups in the shelter goes to... Korie and Panama!πŸ‘―β€

Seriously, is there any dog more fashion-forward than a greyhound? These two are rugged up and adorable, although their supermodel walk looks a little different than what you'd expect - More like a supermodel zoom. 🏎️ Both of these gorgeous greyhounds are available for adoption!

Korie, our stargirl, is a very active 7-year-old girl who would love a home with a backyard to stretch her long legs in. She's looking for loving people who want to spend lots of quality time with her walking, playing and lounging. She enjoys the company of other dogs a LOT! Korie will need to go to a home with a large male dog so she can enjoy canine company all day every day! Because Korie is such an active, enthusiastic gal, she would be best suited to a home with kids over the age of 10. Please bring your dog and any kids in the family along to the meet and greet. 🐾

Sporting his stylish tartan jacket is Panama! Panama is a 4-year-old boy with a goofy personality and lots of love to give. This lovely lad missed out on his puppy years as a racing greyhound, so he will need some extra guidance and positive encouragement when he's experiencing new things including meeting new dogs and people. With some patience and love, he will grow to be a wonderful member of the family. Panama could live with another large dog and will also be suited to a home with kids over the age of 10, after a successful meet and greet!

While Korie and Panama can live with another large dog, they are not suitable to live with cats.

If either of these dogs sounds like a good fit for your family, read more about them on our website, or visit our North Melbourne shelter to meet them. No appointments required, just pop in during our opening hours with your human and canine family members. πŸ’™

After spending the past decade living abroad, Matt and Emma decided it was time to take the next step in their lives - Get a dog!

At 9 months old, Nash stood out as the chillest puppy in the shelter, and they took him home that day.

They had never had a puppy, and Nash had never been adopted before, so the first few months with Nash were a bit of a learning curve for everyone! Even though he was a puppy on the inside, the outside was very much a big, lanky dog. Matt and Emma were committed to Nash, and they didn't let the trials of puppyhood shake them. Now, they couldn't imagine life without this gentle giant.

We assume that Nash's adopters have maxed out the storage on their camera roll since they adopted him. Emma sent us a whole drive of Nash pics because she thinks 'every photo of him is beautiful'. We can totally relate.

Even if you've never had a dog before, an open heart, a willingness to learn, and a great match can change your life in the best way possible.

We'll finish with a message from Emma and Matt:

'Thank you for the work you do - we’re so grateful to have walked into the shelter that day and left with the most beautiful boy on earth.'

After another huge month, we can't quite believe our eyes!

We are proud to announce that we facilitated a staggering 1,086 adoptions, including 404 adult cats and 125 adult dogs, during the second month of our Adoption 400 campaign.

In addition to 1,086 adoptions, our trusted rescue partners took in 174 animals, helping ease the strain on our shelters. We know shelters and rescues alike have been feeling the intense pressure of this extended kitten season, and we are so grateful to all the organisations that work with us and help find more animals loving homes.

As always, we are eternally grateful to the people who open their homes and foster animals, giving 755 animals this month a place to relax, recover and grow. We admire the generosity and kindness of each foster carer who comes back again and again to help animals in need.

Thanks again to the staff and volunteers at LDH for the hard work, time and compassion you bring every single day.

🚨 We've reached the final days of Adoption 400!

We have been so happy to see hundreds of happy cats, dogs, kittens and puppies find their forever homes in the past few months, and we have been loving all the adorable updates. There are still so many animals in the shelter waiting for someone to help them make their own happy tales.

For the final two days of Adoption 400, we have reduced the adoption fees for kittens as our shelters are still feeling the pressure of this never ending kitten season. 🐱

Adoption fees for Friday, 29th and Saturday, 30th of May will be:
$50 for kittens 🐈
$25 for cats over the age of 6 months πŸˆβ€β¬›

Adopting a kitten or cat can be up to a 20-year commitment! If you are considering adopting this weekend, please ensure that your home and family are ready to take on a new family member. Cat ownership comes with long-term costs such as yearly registration, veterinary treatments, food and enrichment items to keep your kitty busy. We know that adopters come with an open heart and the sincerest intentions to give a cat a loving home, no matter the fee, because we see it every day. You can find resources on our website to learn more about the cost of pet ownership.

When you feel confident in your decision to adopt, come on down and meet your new furry friend!

If the kitten or cat you have your eye on isn't available when you arrive, you may still find the perfect pet for your family. Come down to either of our shelters in North Melbourne and Cranbourne on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th of May to give an animal in need a loving home.

UPDATE: Brian has been adopted!

We promise he's not mad at you; he just has a case of RBF (Resting Brian Face).

Brian isn't grumpy! He is a shy cat with a gentle nature and needs a kind, patient person to give him a forever home.

Since his arrival at the shelter, Brian has struggled with his confidence when meeting strangers. He is overlooked by adopters who favour the more outgoing cats and it is heartbreaking to see an already timid cat spend weeks in a stressful environment with no interest.

At 9 years old, Brian has been through a lot. He came to us as a stray, injured, afraid and in need of veterinary care. After spending some time in hospital under the care of our shelter vets, Brian made a great recovery and is ready to start his new life.

Brian has tested positive for FIV which means he will need a slightly different living arrangement than other cats . FIV is spread through cats fighting and biting one another, so he will have to remain an indoors only kitty to avoid contact with other cats. With a little bit of extra care and attention, Brian will be able to live a full, happy life.

Our staff and volunteers have spent a lot of time with Brian, and he has shown them that he is a sweet cat who enjoys gentle affection, head butts, treats and peace and quiet, which is hard to come by in the shelter. If you spend a few extra minutes with Brian, you'll understand why we think he's so special.

Brian is available to adopt from our North Melbourne shelter. You can read more about him on our website, or come in and meet him in the fur.

Please be patient with Brian, he deserves patience, kindness and love just as much as every other cat.

Here are some happy kitty updates to get you through your Tuesday! 🐱

Every one of these cats and kittens was adopted in the last few months. Swipe through for cuteness and read along to see what they've been up to!

Little ginger supermodel, Locky, couldn't be cuter, and he knows it! His new family absolutely adore him.

Ziggy and Bambi love wrestling and cuddling. πŸ€— They are thriving in their new home and thoroughly enjoying each other's company.

Albi spends his time lounging around the house and showing off his baby blue πŸ‘οΈ from his 'princess tower'.

Occy has made himself right at home and is enjoying all the love, affection and cosy cave beds from his devoted family.

Momo has taken after his dog brother and decided that crate training is his new hobby.

Lucy is the fluffiest, sweetest little snugglebug. 🐞

Beautiful Hazel is showing off her majestic fur in her impressively large scratcher!

We LOVE receiving these updates. If you've adopted a new pet, you are always welcome to share your stories and photos with us. Every adoption update makes us feel warm and fuzzy (just like these kitties).

Let's hear it for Pluto! πŸ’«

Pluto, formerly known as Big M, is as happy as can be in his new home.

Pluto's family have watched him flourish since he came home, and they absolutely adore him. He's making dog and human friends wherever he goes and experiencing life as a relaxed, reassured pup.

Pluto has spent the past 4 weeks soaking up all the affection he can from his family and learning to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, like staking his claim to the couch and turning it into 'his giant dog bed'.

Described as a 'dog's dog', Pluto has taken a particular shine to some of the dogs in his neighbourhood. His adopter, Kelsey, did mention that an adopted brother or sister for Pluto may be on the cards in the future! 🀞

If you saw the original video of Pluto, you'll see a dog who wasn't coping in the shelter. He had spent many anxious months waiting to be adopted, and we knew he had the potential to be a wonderful companion. He just needed someone to see past his exterior and give him a real chance. He needed the stability and love of a forever home and family to give him a chance to decompress and let his personality shine through.

Look at him now! πŸ’™

UPDATE: Jace has been adopted πŸ’™

Jace is the definition of a gentle soul.

9 and a half-year-old Jace has spent 81 days in the shelter waiting for someone to adopt him, and we aren't entirely sure why he's STILL waiting. This boy is pure love.

He's got everything you could want in a cat - Striking markings, great head boops, an affectionate nature and a playful streak.

Don't be fooled by his age; Jace has plenty of energy for some extra play and mischief between naps. Rest assured, you'll still have plenty of nap time with Jace.

Plus, he's big enough to take up half the couch and keep you warm all through winter!

We would really love for someone kind and loving to come along and adopt Jace ASAP. He is a gentle cat with so much love to give, and no one is giving him a chance.

If you're looking for a big cat with an even bigger heart, come in and meet Jace at our Cranbourne shelter today πŸ’™

Today marks the first day of National Volunteer Week! πŸŽ‰

We want to thank our volunteers for spending their free time, weekends and public holidays giving animals companionship, exercise, enrichment and so much more.

The relationships our volunteers have built between each other, our staff and our animals will last a lifetime, and we are honoured to be a part of it.

To our amazing vollies, whether you’re helping in laundry, administration, events, customer service, or any of our 14 volunteer roles, every single one of you makes a meaningful difference to so many animals and people. You bring a light and energy that shines across our entire organisation. Like Tanya said, we can feel it, and the animals feel it too. 🐾

Thank you for everything you do πŸ’™
