Introducing Dogs 🐕🐕

Many people instinctively allow their dogs to walk directly towards each other for a face-to-face greeting while on leash. We’re probably all guilty of it at some point!

Although this feels natural to us, it can be one of the most uncomfortable ways for dogs to meet and can sometimes lead to reactivity, which we definitely don’t want.

Leashes restrict movement, preventing dogs from creating space, approaching in an arc or walking away if they feel unsure. This can increase tension and lead to defensive or reactive behaviour.

A much better introduction is to begin with a parallel walk.

Instead of stopping for a nose-to-nose greeting, both handlers walk in the same direction with a comfortable distance between the dogs.

This allows the dogs to observe each other, take in scent and read body language without the pressure of direct interaction. If both remain relaxed, with loose bodies and calm behaviour, the distance can gradually be reduced.

Once both dogs are comfortable, they can be allowed to interact naturally, ideally in a neutral area with enough space to move freely.

What to Say to Another Dog Owner

Don’t be afraid to guide the introduction. Most owners appreciate clear communication.

You could say:

🐾 “Would you mind walking with us for a minute instead of letting them meet head-on?”

🐾 “Let’s walk in the same direction first and let them get used to each other.”

🐾 “Can we keep a little space between them while they settle?”

🐾 “If they’re still relaxed after a short walk, we can let them say hello.”

A successful introduction isn’t about getting dogs to greet as quickly as possible. It’s about allowing them to become comfortable with each other first.

Taking a few extra minutes to walk together can lead to calmer, safer and more enjoyable interactions for everyone. 🤎
