🌿 Scent Training Sunday!

Big thanks to Bronwyn & Jett for helping us kick off our introduction to scent work! 🐾

Scent training taps into a dog’s incredible sense of smell, boosting confidence, strengthening bonds, and keeping them mentally stimulated. Perfect for all breeds and ages—and a fun way to tire them out without lots of physical exertion!

We began with clove-scented tins and hidden treats, and it was fascinating to see how each dog approached the task. As a participant with D’Arcy, I had so much fun and loved seeing the unique personalities and determination of every pup! 👃💛

Hi all, I’m Travis and this is my boy Medo, a German Shepherd cross Siberian Husky who just turned 4.

Six days ago, a split-second decision and quick thinking from my partner Nicole likely saved Medo’s life. While at her 15-acre property outside Melbourne, Medo’s tether was taken off and chased a large dominant male kangaroo down the road and across neighbouring land.

After searching for about 45 minutes by car and on foot, Nicole decided to check a private road again. She spotted Medo near a creek with the kangaroo in the water trying to lure him in. Nicole jumped an electric fence and ran toward him, calling his name. Medo heard her but briefly turned back toward the kangaroo until she commanded him to “stop” and “sit,” which he did. Once he saw her, he followed her back to safety and we got him into the car.

Looking back, if Nicole hadn’t made that decision and reacted so quickly, I truly believe the kangaroo could have drowned Medo.

Medo’s recall is strong most of the time, but prey drive can override training in a split second. My moment of inattention could have cost him his life.

Please remember that even well-trained dogs can react to prey instincts. Using a lead or long lead when walking can prevent a tragedy like this.

⚠️ Attention dog owners! Lion’s Mane jellyfish may be in the water and a sting can be life-threatening for dogs.
✅ Supervise swims closely
✅ Avoid areas where jellyfish are present
✅ If stung: rinse with seawater and seek urgent vet care
