The answer is simple: the colour of the egg depends on the breed of chicken that laid it.

🐔 White eggs are often laid by breeds with white earlobes, such as Leghorns.
🐔 Brown eggs come from breeds like Rhode Island Reds and Australorps.
🐔 Blue eggs are laid by breeds such as Araucanas.
🐔 Green and olive eggs are produced by certain crossbreeds, often known as Olive Eggers.

🚨 H5 bird flu detected in Australia.

A suspected case of H5 avian influenza has been identified in a wild migratory bird in Western Australia, marking the first detection of this strain on mainland Australia. Authorities are continuing investigations and monitoring to understand the spread and impact.

While the risk to people remains low, we all must stay alert and help protect our wildlife, poultry and bird populations.

Signs of H5 bird flu in birds can include:
• Sudden death
• Lethargy or weakness
• Reluctance to move, eat or drink
• Difficulty breathing, coughing or sneezing
• Swelling around the head, neck or eyes
• Diarrhoea
• Loss of coordination, unusual head/neck posture, or inability to stand or fly

If you find a sick or dead bird:
❌ Do not touch it
🐾 Keep pets away
📍 Take note of the location (photos/video can help if safe to do so)
📞 Report it immediately via the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888 (available 24 hours)

Cold mornings are here! ❄️🐔

As temperatures drop, it's important to keep an eye on your flock. Birds with fewer feathers can struggle to stay warm, making them more susceptible to illness. A noticeable drop in egg production can also be an early sign that your birds may be lacking protein.

One tell-tale sign of a protein deficiency? Birds eating dropped or shed feathers from the ground.

To help your flock stay healthy and productive through winter:
✔️ Provide plenty of perching space so birds can get off the cold ground and huddle together
✔️ Ensure they have shelter from cold drafts
✔️ Supplement their feed with high-quality vitamins and amino acids
✔️ Increase protein levels to support feather regrowth and overall condition

A little extra care now can go a long way toward keeping your birds comfortable, healthy, and laying well throughout winter.

We had a great few days chatting all things chooks, meeting so many of you in person, and seeing plenty of top-quality birds on display. Always good to put faces to names and hear what everyone’s working on at home.
