🌸🐱 Marcie vs The Lily: A Very Close Call! 🚨
Meet Marcie, a gorgeous young kitten who got herself into a spot of trouble after deciding that a lily looked like a tasty snack! Unfortunately for Marcie, lilies are highly toxic to cats and even small amounts can cause severe acute kidney failure. This includes eating parts of the plant and, in some cases, exposure to pollen or vase water. ⚠️🐾

Common signs of lily toxicity can include:
🤢 Vomiting and nausea
💧 Increased or decreased drinking and urination
😴 Lethargy and weakness
🍽️ Loss of appetite
🐾 Abdominal discomfort
🚨 In severe cases, kidney failure and neurological signs can develop

Thankfully, Marcie's family saw the lily staining on her face and acted quickly. She was brought straight to Advanced Vetcare. We thoroughly washed her face, induced vomiting to remove as much of the plant as possible and started her on IV fluids to protect her kidneys. 💧🩺

The good news? Marcie's kidney parameters remained normal the following day, and she was able to head home happy and healthy! 🏡💕

A reminder for cat owners: If you have cats at home, it's safest to avoid lilies altogether. They are simply not worth the risk! We're very happy this little lily-loving troublemaker had a happy ending! 🐱🌿

Meet Joey, an 11-year-old Samoyed with quite the appetite... just not for food! 🐾

Joey came to see us after several weeks of ongoing diarrhoea, poor appetite, and a worrying weight loss of nearly 2 kg in just 4 weeks. Abdominal X-rays revealed he'd been snacking on an impressive collection of rocks 🪨. While that certainly wasn't ideal, we weren't convinced it explained everything.

An abdominal ultrasound uncovered another suspiciously shaped foreign body hiding in his intestines. The only way to find out what it was with exploratory surgery. The culprit? A doorstop! 🚪😳

Joey's story is a great reminder that our pets can swallow the most unexpected objects, and sometimes there is more than one problem going on. If your pet has persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, or unexplained weight loss, it's always worth having them checked sooner rather than later.

We're happy to report Joey is on the road to recovery, and back home with his family ❤️🐶.

🐾💙 Patient Update: Louie! 💙🐾
Meet Louie, a gorgeous 6-month-old Yorkshire Terrier who recently visited us after becoming unwell with inappetence (not wanting to eat) and diarrhoea.

Young puppies can become dehydrated much more quickly than adult dogs, especially when they're experiencing vomiting or diarrhoea. If your puppy stops eating or has ongoing tummy upsets, it's important to have them checked by a veterinarian as early treatment can make a big difference.

Louie was admitted to hospital where he received:
💧 Intravenous fluids to correct dehydration
💉 Anti-nausea medication to help settle his tummy
💊 Probiotics to support a healthy gut

We're delighted to say Louie responded beautifully to treatment and has made a great recovery! He's now back home, where we hope he's enjoying plenty of cuddles, rest, and getting back to his cheeky puppy adventures. 🏡🐾❤️

🚨 Rat Bait Alert – Louie's Story 🚨

Meet Louie, a gorgeous 7-year-old Kelpie with a tale that could have ended very differently.

Louie's owners first noticed he seemed lethargic and had developed a soft cough at home. Not long afterwards, he suddenly collapsed, and they rushed him to their regular veterinarian. His regular vet quickly suspected rat bait toxicity, and blood tests confirmed prolonged clotting times—a tell-tale sign that his blood could no longer clot properly. Recognising how critical his condition was, they referred Louie to us for emergency treatment 🚑

When Louie arrived, he was suffering from severe internal bleeding caused by the rat bait. 😟

Our team provided intensive care, including:
💧 Intravenous fluids
🩸 A plasma transfusion to replace the missing clotting factors
❤️ A packed red blood cell transfusion to treat blood loss
💊 Vitamin K, the antidote for this type of rat bait

After several days of around-the-clock care, we're thrilled to say Louie made a fantastic recovery and was able to head home to his loving family. 🥰🏡

⚠️ Did you know? Many rat baits work by preventing the body from recycling vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting. This can lead to life-threatening internal bleeding, and pets may not show signs until several days after ingestion.
If you suspect your dog or cat has eaten rat bait—even if they seem completely normal—seek veterinary attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can be lifesaving.

A huge thank you to Louie's regular veterinarian for recognising the signs so quickly and referring him for urgent care. 💙 Teamwork truly saves lives! 🐾

🎉🐾 A very big congratulations to our newest chemotherapy graduates! 🐾🎉

Over the past few weeks, we've had the privilege of celebrating some truly incredible patients as they completed their chemotherapy treatment protocols.

Every tail wag, happy purr, nose boop, and treat accepted along the way has reminded us just how resilient our furry friends can be. While cancer treatment isn't always an easy journey, these amazing pets have shown us what bravery looks like—one appointment at a time.

To our wonderful graduates and your human families, thank you for trusting us to care for your beloved companions throughout their journey.

Congratulations to all of our recent chemo graduates—you've stolen our hearts, and we'll be cheering you on every step of the way. 💜🎓🐾

🧁🐶 Baking Ingredients + Curious Puppies = A Recipe for Trouble! 🚑💛
Meet Bronte, an adorable little Airedale puppy with a taste for baking... or at least the ingredients! 😅. Bronte managed to get into cream of tartar, which may seem harmless in the kitchen but can be very dangerous for dogs. ⚠️

Cream of tartar contains high levels of potassium bitartrate - the same compound that makes grapes and raisins dangerous to dogs. It can can cause serious clinical signs including:

🐾 Nausea and vomiting
💓 A rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
⚡ Tremors and seizures
🩺 Acute kidney (renal) failure

Bronte spent the day with us receiving IV fluids to support her kidneys, medication to lower her potassium levels, and close monitoring by our veterinary and nursing teams. ❤️‍🩹

Thankfully, this cheeky pup responded beautifully to treatment and was soon back to her playful self, ready to head home to continue her adventures (hopefully with fewer baking ingredients involved! 🥰).

💡 Pet Safety Tip: Many common household foods and pantry items can be toxic to our pets. If your dog has eaten something unusual, it's always safest to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
Well done, Bronte! We think it's best to leave the baking to the humans from now on! 🐾💙🍰

🐶💛 A Very Special Delivery! 🐾🎉
At Advanced Vetcare Kew, we're incredibly fortunate to work alongside our wonderful neighbours at Guide Dogs Victoria. 💙

Last weekend, beautiful mum-to-be Inka found herself having a difficult labour and was rushed to our hospital for an emergency caesarean section. 🩺💛
We're delighted to report that Indi came through surgery beautifully and welcomed SEVEN gorgeous puppies into the world! 🐾🐾

💙 5 boys

Mum and all seven pups are doing well, and we couldn't be happier to have played a small part in helping them safely arrive. 🥰
Who knows what the future holds for these little superstars? 🌟 With a little luck, plenty of training and lots of love, they may one day go on to become life-changing Guide Dogs, helping Australians live with greater independence and confidence. 🦮❤️
