Meet Emma! ❤️
Em has been part of the Malvern Vet family for 37 years, making her the longest-serving staff member in the clinic’s incredible 70-year history!
Her story began when she was a Year 9 work experience student at Malvern Vet. It didn’t take long for Em to realise that this was her calling in life — her passion, her purpose and where she belonged. 🐶🐱
After finishing high school, Em returned to Malvern and began working full-time as a vet nurse alongside an amazing team of vets and nurses.
Over the years, so many wonderful people have come and gone through the clinic, and Em feels incredibly lucky to call many of them lifelong friends. She still catches up with lots of her former colleagues regularly, a testament to the special friendships made along the way. ❤️
Em’s absolute passion has always been caring for her clients’ pets as if they were her own. But it’s not just the four-legged family members she loves looking after — she loves looking after their humans, too!
Always up for a chat at the front desk, Em genuinely loves hearing what clients have been up to. One of the most special parts of her job has been watching generations of families grow up and welcoming their pets through the clinic doors over so many years.
And, of course, Em hasn’t just cared for other people’s animals over the years — she’s brought a few of her own into work, too! 🐾
Her Malvern Vet family has met:
🐕 Jordie, her Gordon Setter
🐕 Indy, Nellie and Billie, her three Great Danes
🐈 Bailley, her Burmese cat
🐴 And last but certainly not least, GingerMegs, a naughty miniature pony whom Em bottle-fed for months!
Thirty-seven years of care, compassion, friendships and countless furry (and not-so-furry!) faces. 🥰
Thank you, Em, for being such a special part of the Malvern Vet family and for the love, dedication and warmth you bring to the clinic every day.

A very royal birthday has been celebrated recently! 👑

The gorgeous HRH Diana just turned one, and as you can see she celebrated her birthday exactly how a little princess should with lots of treats and love 😍

Sudden lameness can stem from a minor sprain, a grass seed or thorn, a torn nail, or something more serious like a fracture or cruciate ligament injury. 🐕

If your dog is holding the leg up completely, crying in pain, has swelling or heat, or the leg is in an obviously abnormal position, seek veterinary care promptly. ⚠️

If mild lameness hasn’t improved after a day of rest, it’s also time for a vet visit. Early assessment helps us treat the cause and keep your dog comfortable. 🩺

For mild, short-lived tummy upsets, a bland diet may help some dogs and cats. 🐶🐱 Boiled, skinless chicken breast or lean white fish with plain boiled rice or pumpkin are easy, gentle options. Feed small, frequent meals rather than one large serve, and gradually reintroduce your pet’s normal food over a few days once symptoms settle.

These home-prepared diets aren’t complete and balanced, so they should only be used short term and ideally under veterinary guidance. 🥣

If vomiting is repeated, diarrhoea is severe, appetite is poor, or your pet seems unwell, please book a vet check promptly. 🩺

In honour of Malvern Vets turning 70, we wanted to shine a light on Dr John Stirling 🌟

Dr John bought the practice from Dr Rowan Blogg in 1976, on the same day his first child was born!

He is responsible for getting the practice accredited as a "Hospital of Excellence" in 1981, a title we still hold to this day!🎉

Dr John and Dr Rowan (who remained at the practice as a Veterinary Opthalmologist) formed Victoria's first veterinary specialist centre, which was filled with veterinary specialists ranging from dermatologists, internal medicine specialists, behaviourists, radiologists and of course an Opthalmologist.

Dr John became an academic associate and senior fellow at the University of Melbourne and opened the hospital to help train the future veterinary stars of the university, a practice the hospital still continues today! 🤩

Probiotics may support gut health, particularly after antibiotic use, during stressful periods, or for pets with sensitive tummies. 🦠 Not every pet needs one, though, and quality varies widely between products.

Look for a veterinary-specific probiotic with documented strains and an adequate viable colony count, rather than a human product. 🐾 If your pet has ongoing digestive issues, a probiotic isn’t a substitute for investigating the underlying cause.
