A lack of sight is not a lack of vision.

Today, on International White Cane Day, we’re joining Guide Dogs Victoria in celebrating the independence, ambitions and achievements of people who are blind or have low vision.

A white cane is more than a mobility aid. It’s a tool that supports independence, confidence and the freedom to navigate the world.

Yet some of the biggest barriers people face aren’t physical. They’re the assumptions others make about what someone can or cannot achieve.

This year’s campaign reminds us to look beyond those assumptions and recognise the person, their passions and their possibilities.

Grooming day for Lenny! 🐾

A trip to the groomers means a change in Lenny’s usual routine, so I like to give him a little extra support.

This morning, I’m adding our Houndztooth Anxiety Aid to his breakfast before we head off.

Same vet. Two very different personalities. 😂

Annual health check-up time for Stella and Lenny with our favourite vet, Dr Raquel Newman at Elwood & Albert Park Vet 🍃

Raquel has been looking after our dogs for over 10 years, and Stella and Lenny since they were puppies. After all these years, their approaches to a vet visit couldn’t be more different.

🐶 Lenny: Sits politely, poses for a photo and maintains a dignified expression. A model patient.

🐶 Stella: Arrives like she’s visiting her favourite person in the world. Immediately launches into a series of crocodile rolls, complete with flying legs, enthusiastic kisses and absolutely no concept of personal space.

One comes for the check-up. The other comes for the entertainment.

A big thank you to Raquel for taking such wonderful care of Stella and Lenny over the years.

Can dogs sense earthquakes before we do?

At just after 2am this morning, an earthquake struck in Victoria — and was felt right across Melbourne.

What made me take particular notice was Stella. Yesterday, she just wasn’t herself. She was behaving strangely enough that I noticed it and wondered what was going on.

Then came the earthquake overnight.

So, naturally, I started wondering: could Stella have sensed something before we did?

There is some interesting research around this. Studies have recorded unusual behaviour in dogs and other animals before earthquakes, including increased restlessness and changes in activity. One study following the 2011 earthquake in Japan found that 236 of 1,259 dog owners reported unusual behaviour in their dogs before the earthquake, with restlessness the most commonly reported change.

Scientists still don’t know whether animals can reliably detect an earthquake hours before it happens. Dogs have incredibly sensitive hearing and can detect subtle vibrations that we may not notice, but unusual behaviour isn’t considered a reliable earthquake warning system.

Sometimes, poo tells us more than we might think.

For puppies, changes in their poo can be one of the first visible signs that something isn’t quite right — whether that’s digestive upset, a change in diet or routine, or stress.

For a Guide Dog puppy, supporting gut health is particularly important. Their early months involve new environments, experiences, training and changes to routine as they learn and develop.

Paying attention to what’s normal — including changes in stool consistency, frequency and digestive comfort — can provide useful clues about how a puppy is adjusting.

There’s more to your dog’s poo than simply whether it’s firm or soft.

Poo can provide useful clues about digestive health, but it’s only one part of the picture. Diet, stress, changes in routine and your dog’s individual digestive system can all influence what you see on your daily walk.

The most useful thing you can do? Know what’s normal for your dog. That makes it much easier to spot when something changes.

Persistent changes in your dog’s poo, or changes accompanied by other signs of illness, should always be discussed with your vet.

Your dog’s poo can tell you more than you might think.

Healthy poo should generally be firm, well-formed and easy to pick up. Changes in consistency can sometimes be one of the first signs that something isn’t quite right with their digestion.

Regularly look out for:

• Hard, dry or crumbly stools
• Softer than normal poo
• Mucus or a jelly-like coating
• Loose or watery diarrhoea
• Changes that persist or keep returning

Dietary changes, stress, eating something they shouldn’t, parasites and digestive upset can all affect your dog’s poo.

Knowing what’s normal for your dog makes it easier to notice when something changes. Persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stool or other signs of illness should always be discussed with your vet.

Behind the Scenes | A special visitor to Houndztooth

We recently welcomed the team from Guide Dogs Victoria to Houndztooth — along with Nessa, a Guide Dog in training.

Nessa was off duty during her visit, which meant there was time for a friendly pat between conversations.

It’s always valuable to catch up with the GDV team, share ideas and learn more about the health and wellbeing needs of the dogs in their care.

Nessa was a very welcome addition to the meeting.
