From a short life spent in a breeding facility to a home filled with love, comfort and security… what can we say that doesn’t already fill our hearts with joy.

Sid is home 🩵

We couldn’t be happier for this beautiful boy, knowing that his future is secure, that he has a family of his own, and that he finally has the chance to simply be a dog — to be loved, cherished, spoiled and to enjoy the life he should have been born into.

Watching dogs like Sid leave their past behind and step into a brighter future is why we do what we do. Every dog deserves a happy ending, and Sid’s story is only just beginning.

A huge thank you to his wonderful foster parents, Giulia and Bill, for helping Sid discover the world beyond the breeding facility and showing him the love, patience and kindness that prepared him for this next chapter. Thank you also to Kelly and Tina for opening their home and hearts to get him out of the shelter when he needed it most.

And to Daniel and Jazmyn — thank you for choosing Sid. We know he has found the perfect family, and we can’t wait to see all the adventures, cuddles and memories that lie ahead.

Good luck, sweet boy. Your forever starts now.

We wish Sid, Daniel and Jazmyn a lifetime of love, laughter and happiness together ♥️

Hazel had her recheck appointment yesterday and there is some good news — her bacterial infection has cleared up.

Unfortunately, Hazel is now battling a yeast infection, so she will be on treatment for the next 10 days before returning to the vet for another check-up.

Hazel continues to have ongoing skin issues, which sadly isn’t surprising given the years of neglect she endured before coming into our care. The lack of proper veterinary treatment over such a long period has clearly taken a toll on her health, both medically and physically.

While her recovery is proving to be a slow journey, Hazel is receiving the care she has always deserved, and we remain committed to helping her feel comfortable, healthy, and loved.

Thank you to everyone who continues to follow and support Hazel’s progress. Every small step forward is worth celebrating 💕

Great news for little Billy!

Billy has officially been given the all clear from his kennel cough, and even better — he has gained a whole kilo in just 10 days! Watching him start to feel better, stronger and more comfortable is incredibly rewarding.

At his recent follow-up vet check he was an absolute superstar with Dr Kyle. Not only did he handle his vet visit beautifully, he even allowed Kyle to pick him up — something that is huge for a dog who was initially described as highly anxious and a potential bite risk.

What we are seeing instead is a sweet little dog who is learning to trust, feeling safe, and showing everyone just how gentle he truly is when given patience and kindness.

Next stop: his dental next week so he can continue feeling his very best. We’re so proud of you, Billy 💙

Sometimes the happy endings make all the heartbreak worth it 💕

Beautiful Maggie has officially found her forever home, and by the looks of these photos, she’s settled in exactly where she was always meant to be.

Her new family sent us this beautiful message today:

“There is so much love and joy being shared with our new beautiful addition. Maggie and Molly have bonded so well in such a short time. We want to thank Cheryl (foster mum) along with all the other foster mums making it possible for these beautiful creatures to have another shot at living a life in a loving, caring and happy environment.”

Messages like this mean everything to our volunteer team. Seeing rescue dogs not only accepted, but truly loved, cherished and embraced as family is why we do what we do.

Thank you Stan, Iole and Molly for opening your hearts and home to Maggie. And a very special thank you to Cheryl for fostering, loving and helping Maggie on her journey to this beautiful new chapter 🩷

Happy tails forever, sweet girl 🌸

Welcome to Sweet Paws Dog Rescue, Chester 🩵

At almost 13 years old, this beautiful Maltese x Shih Tzu boy has found himself needing a fresh start after coming into the care of RSPCA Victoria via the Inspectorate when his owner could no longer afford the veterinary care he desperately needed.

And sadly, poor Chester really does need a lot of help.

This sweet old man was carrying almost double the weight he should be, entering the shelter needing to lose around 5kg — nearly half his body weight. His little body is struggling under the pressure, with arthritis already affecting his left elbow and making movement uncomfortable.

On top of that, Chester is suffering from severe grade 4 dental disease, painful dry eye disease in both eyes, chronic skin issues, hair loss, fleas (now treated) elevated liver and kidney parameters, low thyroid levels and multiple eye conditions that have left his eyes sore, inflamed and producing discharge.

He’s also entire, but right now he’s unfortunately not safe to undergo anaesthetic for desexing due to his obesity and overall condition. Before we can even think about that, Chester needs to stabilise, lose weight and begin feeling better.

It’s a long road ahead for this senior boy.

But despite everything his little body is battling, Chester has been nothing but gentle and sweet. Underneath all the medical concerns is a deserving old soul who finally has the chance to be cared for properly.

We know his transformation won’t happen overnight, but we’re committed to helping Chester become as comfortable, healthy and happy as possible for however many years he has ahead of him.

Thank you to RSPCA Victoria for entrusting us with his care.

Please note Chester is NOT ready for adoption and still has a significant medical journey ahead of him before we can consider applications.

Welcome to the Sweet Paws family, Chester.

We’ve got you buddy 🩵

This was never supposed to happen… but some souls find their way into your heart before you even realise it ♥️

Almost 9 weeks ago, a tiny frightened little girl named Fifi walked through our doors as a foster dog. I told myself over and over again she would not become a foster fail.

But Fifi’s story is one that changes you.

Fifi and her 3 Chihuahua friends were part of a large rescue seizure that entered RSPCA Victoria’s shelter after a life no dog should ever endure. Used for breeding, discarded as nothing more than a way to make money, they lived hidden away in dark sheds with no natural light, trapped in muddy pens alongside multiple other breeds of dogs.

No warm beds.
No safety.
No kindness.
No one to love them.

Just filth, fear and survival.

When Fifi arrived, she carried all of that with her.

In rescue, there are dogs who come into care scared but recover quickly once they realise they are safe… and then there are the broken ones.

The ones whose trauma sits so deeply inside them that it changes the way they see the world.

Fifi was one of those dogs.

Watching her try to navigate simple things most dogs take for granted was heartbreaking. The fear in her eyes, the uncertainty, the way she would quietly retreat into herself — it was impossible not to wonder what she had lived through behind those shed walls.

Some dogs leave rescue and move happily into new homes.

And then there are the dogs who quietly choose their people.

The dogs who finally let their guard down in one place, with one family, after a lifetime of never feeling safe.

Could I have rehomed Fifi? Maybe.

But deep down, I knew asking her to start all over again would have been for me, not for her.

Because for the first time in her life, Fifi finally feels safe.

She knows our voices.
She knows our home.
She knows our routines.
She knows she will never be hurt again.

And somewhere along the way, this tiny broken little dog stopped being “a foster” and simply became ours.

The truth is, some dogs don’t just need rescuing.
They need belonging.
They need patience.
They need people willing to love them exactly as they are, scars and all.

So this is us officially admitting what everybody already knew…

Fifi isn’t going anywhere ❤️

Welcome to your forever family, beautiful girl.
The rest of your life will be nothing like the beginning.

National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering, held from 18–24 May. It’s a time to recognise the millions of Australians who generously give their time to support others, while also encouraging people to discover the connection, compassion and purpose volunteering can bring.

At Sweet Paws Dog Rescue Inc, we are an entirely volunteer-run organisation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming small breed dogs across Melbourne.

Every single person involved with Sweet Paws is completely unpaid.

Nobody receives a wage, salary or financial benefit for the countless hours they dedicate to rescue. From administration, transport, fundraising and social media, to foster care, vet runs, grooming appointments, meet-and-greets and late-night emergency pickups — every single task is carried out by volunteers donating their own personal time, fuel, energy and love.

We cover all approved veterinary care for our dogs, our wonderful friends at Dashing Designer Dogs generously groom our rescue dogs free of charge, Lyka Pet Food helps keep our dogs fed, and Bunnings Mornington continues to support us through community sausage sizzles and fundraising opportunities, and of course our donors whether you donate as a ‘one-off’ or ongoing (thank you 🌸).

But the heart of Sweet Paws — the people who truly keep everything moving — are our foster carers.

Without them, the wheels on our bus would simply stop turning.

Our foster carers are also entirely unpaid volunteers. They receive no financial assistance for the extraordinary work they do. They open not only their homes, but their hearts, to dogs who have often known fear, neglect, uncertainty and heartbreak.

They collect dogs from shelters and private surrender situations, drive to vet appointments and grooming visits, attend house checks, provide transport, administer medication, clean up messes, comfort anxious dogs, and provide around-the-clock care every single day.

They are there for the nervous first nights, the medical recoveries, the toilet training, the cuddles on the couch, the early mornings, the late nights, and the beautiful moments when a dog finally learns what safety and love feel like.

The work they do is endless, emotional, exhausting at times — and completely priceless.

To every single Sweet Paws volunteer and foster carer: thank you. Your compassion, sacrifice and dedication change lives every single day, and we could never do this without you ♥️

Foster Mum Giulia:
“Fostering for us means we can help a little soul that everyone else has given up on, to show not all humans are bad,to show patience and most of all love. Yes it’s hard, frustrating and at times brings you to tears, but even with all that, we will always step up and show up and help where we can.”

Foster Mum Kelly:
“Fostering gives us a loving avenue to give back and provide care to those 4 legged friends who need someone to give them a fighting chance and to advocate for them when they have been let down. Providing what all animals deserve, love, food and shelter importantly care and time to be themselves. It’s beautiful to see them thrive and find forever homes!”

Foster Mum Jo:
“Watching shut down, emotionally hurt little souls come out of their shell and learn to trust has been a real joy. What they give back is wonderful to experience. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to foster such deserving souls who really just want safety, food, care and love.”

Foster Mum Cheryl:
“For me, fostering became something to fill a void after losing my own dog.
But soon became a fulfilling joy to help dogs become happy and learn to trust and appreciate the comforts of a loving and safe home.”

If you’ve ever thought about fostering we’d love to hear from you - just send us a message/email and we’ll get back to you.

Welcome to Sweet Paws, Billy 🩵

Billy arrived into rescue under heartbreaking circumstances.

After being loved since he was a tiny puppy, this little man found himself surrendered to the shelter because his anxiety had become too much for his family to cope with. Over time, Billy began marking in the home more and more frequently, behaviour that escalated as new dogs entered his environment and his stress levels continued to rise.

But behind the toileting accidents, the fear, the growling and the defensive behaviour is something much deeper.

Billy is not a “bad dog.”

Billy is a dog who has been silently struggling for a very, very long time.

A dog living with severe anxiety, confusion and emotional distress that was never truly understood or properly treated.

By the time Billy arrived at the shelter, he was terrified. So stressed he became physically unwell. Frightened of handling, frightened of veterinary examinations, frightened of other dogs and unsure of the people around him. A tiny little dog carrying an enormous emotional burden.

And yet… despite everything written about him, despite the labels, despite the warnings and the repeated returns, we saw something else in Billy.

We saw a dog who deserved the chance to finally feel safe.

And what’s happened since arriving into foster care has honestly been incredible.

Billy has shown absolutely zero signs of aggression or severe anxiety in care. He has been friendly with his fur foster siblings, has happily allowed his foster carers to trim the fur around his eyes and clean his very dirty little bottom without a single issue whatsoever.

When Billy suddenly came down with kennel cough shortly after entering care, we needed to get him seen by a vet urgently. Given the extensive notes about handling aggression and biting, we prepared ourselves for a very difficult visit.

But Billy surprised everyone.

He was not aggressive. He allowed the veterinary team to examine him and handle him safely, proving that sometimes environment, fear and emotional wellbeing can change absolutely everything.

Right now Billy doesn’t need judgement. He doesn’t need people focusing only on the behaviours they can see.

He needs kindness.
He needs stability.
He needs understanding.
And he needs the opportunity to finally decompress and learn that the world is not such a scary place after all.

The shelter behaviour panel believed there was scope for rehabilitation, support and treatment for Billy, and we agreed.

So when rescue became his last chance, we said yes.

A huge thank you to RSPCA Victoria for reaching out for Billy and giving him the opportunity to have a future. Without that phone call, his story may have ended very differently.

Welcome to Sweet Paws, Billy.

Your old life is behind you now, and no matter how long it takes, we are going to help you feel safe, loved and understood 🩵

We’re absolutely raining adoptions here at Sweet Paws!! ☔🐾

Our beautiful boy Barkley has officially found his forever home.

Barkley came into our care after being rescued from a puppy farm and spending time in the shelter system — a little soul who had missed out on so much of what life should have been. The simple things most dogs take for granted were completely foreign to him. Warm beds, kindness, walks, toys, affection, feeling safe… all things Barkley had never truly known.

Thankfully, foster mum Jo stepped in and completely changed the course of his life. With patience, love and understanding, she helped Barkley learn how to simply be a dog. To trust, to relax, to enjoy home life and to discover that the world could actually be a gentle and happy place.

Watching these dogs slowly come out of their shells after years of neglect is something that never stops amazing us.

And now Barkley’s next chapter has begun.

He’s settling beautifully into life with his new family, has already enjoyed his very first holiday to the country, explored local markets, and even has a new fur brother by his side to help him navigate this big new world. From a life of isolation and hardship to one filled with adventure, companionship and love — this is exactly why we do what we do.

To Jo, thank you for giving Barkley the foundation he needed to move forward with confidence. Foster carers truly are the bridge between heartbreak and happiness, and we simply could not do this without you.

And to Barkley’s adopters — thank you for choosing adoption, for opening your hearts and home to a dog who deserved a second chance long before he ever received one.

Happy life sweet boy, you waited a long time for this one 🩵

Just a few days ago we shared how little Hattie had fallen completely head over heels for her foster fur brother Silver ❤️

Well today, we are beyond happy to share that Hattie won’t be going anywhere… because she is already exactly where she was always meant to be.

Home 🏡

Her foster mum Jo simply couldn’t bear the thought of saying goodbye, so this one has officially become a foster fail — and we couldn’t be happier for them all.

Hattie’s past was heartbreaking. She came from a large breeding facility where dogs were housed in mud-floor enclosures with little, if any, exposure to the outside world. A normal home life, soft beds, companionship, affection and safety were things she likely never knew.

But that is now firmly behind her.

Today Hattie is safe, warm, adored and finally learning what it means to simply be a dog. She has a family who love her deeply, a best friend in Silver, and a future filled with kindness, comfort and respect.

Stories like Hattie’s remind us why rescue matters so much. Sometimes the perfect home is the one they’re already in.

Congratulations beautiful girl, on finding your way home 💕
