Zorro working on his flatwork. He’s a long boy! We are here to correctly bring him back into work alongside the owners and support them in that process. He’s got a lot of weight and muscle to gain but it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

2 years of weight gain and muscling!

This is my personal horse, Rocky. He dropped weight very quickly a couple of winters ago when he stopped eating his hard feed.

This boy is now on a fibre based diet which correctly supports his system.
When looking for feeds, I keep in mind not only palatability for my picky pony, but the effects on his brain (can’t have too much sugar) and body (I choose not to feed grains for gut health and ulcer prevention).
This feeding routine alongside consistent work (including hill work) have helped transform him into the body he has today.

The other thing I get asked about a lot is how to build topline. Whilst poles are some people’s go to, I’m a big believer in putting the weight on first, in order to turn it into muscle. So if your horse is hollow at the withers and atrophied over the back, up the fibre, up the hay and get that fat on to support their systems correctly, THEN build the muscle.

Remember, this transformation didn’t happen in a couple of months, it takes time and consistency.

2 weekends ago, I took client horse, Jules, to the AHHA Vic Heavy Horse State Show at Tonimbuk Equestrian Centre.
We had great success in the Shire class, coming first with supreme champion, grand champion and best presented.
I had never done an in-hand show before so was a great experience for the both of us!
Get in touch if you’d like us to take your horses to competitions! 🫶

Little Leo is all ready for winter with his clip ❄️

We offer clips, which greatly benefit our horses in work (or even some out of work!) due to many reasons! A few being;

• Quicker to dry after hosing off sweat 💧
• Able to better manage skin conditions and keep things clean and dry without mystery under the coat 🧽
• Easy grooming and removal of mud 🎀
• Way less shedding coat at the end of season 🐴
• Neater look 👍

If you’re interested in having a clip booked with us, please message the page or contact us via our website jessmazziniequine.com

A great little article detailing why chaff isn’t necessary and doesn’t actually put on weight as most people believe! If anything, it takes up more room in the gut that could be used for fibre rich feed to help with weight gain!

Chaff has long been a standard ingredient in Australian horse feeds, but it is much less common in other parts of the world.

Why we went the way of chaff and the rest of the world didn't, I'm not sure, but I do know that unfortunately on this one we didn't get it right!

Chaff is simply short chopped hay, so while yes, it does provide the same nutrients and fibre content of that hay, it does not provide the same chewing or physical buffering benefits that long stemmed hay does.

Chewing produces saliva, which helps buffer gastric acid, and irregularly chewed up hay that's all stuck together with saliva (lovely!) makes a better "raft" in the stomach to suppress acid splash during exercise. Hay is a clear winner for both of these reasons.

There is also some research that suggests that some chaff can actually be so sharp it injures the stomach lining.

Hay is generally cheaper per kilo, and IMO less laborious to feed out - one biscuit of hay will weigh around 2kg, which is equivalent to about 6-7 scoops of chaff.

Now, I do use a very small amount of chaff myself (as do most of my clients) as I need something to mix supplements with, but that's all it is - a mixer. It can also be useful to help increase forage intake in horses that are starting to have problems chewing due to dental problems - but once the teeth are really gone, even chaff will become problematic.

Rocky and I had a great time at Warwick Schiller’s clinic a couple of weeks ago.
We learnt many new methods based on kindness and the horses consent which we can’t wait to implement with client horses. Warwick is a world renowned horseman and I would strongly recommend familiarising yourself with his methods if you haven’t already! Truely a phenomenal weekend of learning.
