Does your dog have a best friend?

We’re so lucky to have friends with well-matched dogs we can get Sport together with.

The other dog pictured here is Ela, owned by our dear friend Kasia. Our dogs Elliott and Inka, who have both since passed, were very close, so it’s really special to now see these two together.

Often, our puppy clients hear they need to “socialise” their puppy, so they let them play with every dog they meet. What they don’t realise is that every interaction a young pup has helps shape their future social behaviour, for better or worse.

While it’s necessary for your puppy to have social experiences with other dogs it’s important to get the balance right.

With Sport, we’re very intentional about who he spends time with. We don’t go to dog parks to “socialise” with other dogs. Instead:
🐕 We set up playdates with socially competent adult dogs for him to interact with
🐕 We keep interactions with unfamiliar dogs short and sweet
🐕 We play together around other dogs to reinforce that play with me is fun and maintain neutrality (the outside of fenced parks are great for this)
🐕 We meet friends with dogs for coffee or a pint at the pub (or go for walks together) to teach the dogs that hanging out with mates isn’t always about high-arousal play
🐕 When Sport was a very young puppy, we focused on setting up playdates with older, social dogs who could show him the ropes

A big thanks to East West Child Care for having us in last week to talk all things dog safety.

The kids were awesome and learned about:

🐾 Dog body language – how dogs use their whole body to tell us how they’re feeling
🚫 What NOT to do around dogs – giving dogs space and respecting their boundaries
🤝 How to approach a dog safely – with Sport helping us demonstrate the right way

Building safer communities around dogs starts with educating kids. Huge thanks again for having us!

Today would have been your 13th birthday.

I didn’t think saying goodbye would be this unbelievably hard but here we are.

And whilst the girls no longer say good night to you, we still talk about you every day.

As a dog trainer, being able to raise a dog like you is everything. You were the gold standard.

And if I’m honest, I feel a little lost without you.

Today we’ll do the kinds of things we would have done if you were here. Go to your favourite park. Eat ice cream. Share a bowl of hot chips and maybe even share some with Sport like we would have with you.

Happy 2nd birthday, Sport! 🎉

Having a dog that loves to play and train all day and still have the ability to switch off in the house has made you one of the most lovely dogs to live with. You’re getting better at settling at the pub, and you’re proving yourself an asset in our day-to-day work.

I sometimes wonder if you miss playing ‘bitey face’ with your old mate of an evening, or if you’re now just enjoying more of the attention. You still get excited at inappropriate times and love to steal someone’s spot on the couch at the first opportunity, but you fit so well into our family.

Thank you to Pauline & Pete at Tapua Labrador Retrievers for producing such amazing Labradors and allowing this boy into our home.

Today we’re taking Sport for a swim, followed by a celebratory cake made by the kids.
