Calling all Tooronga dog dads… and cat dads! 🐾

This Father’s Day, we want to celebrate the wonderful pet dads in our Tooronga community - and we need your help!

The dads who do the morning walks. The dads who somehow end up with three dogs squeezed onto their side of the couch. The dads who know exactly which treat is the favourite. And, of course, the dad who “didn’t want a cat” but can now regularly be found on the couch with said cat asleep on his chest. 👀

Sound like someone you know?

Drop a photo in the comments of your pet with their dog dad or cat dad, and tell us what makes them such a great pet dad! 📸

We’ll be choosing some of our favourites to feature across Tooronga Veterinary Hospital’s socials this Father’s Day. 🐶🐱

We can’t wait to meet the dads behind some of the very loved pets we’re lucky enough to care for. 💙

Meet Dr Tracy who has recently joined Tooronga Veterinary Hospital, a friendly new face who you will be seeing more around the clinic! 💙

Dr Tracy graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2010 and has been caring for pets, and their people, ever since. While surgery is passionately one of her favourite places to be, she also loves the challenge of working through interesting medical cases - piecing together the clues, finding answers and, best of all, seeing her patients return to their happy, healthy selves.

At the heart of Tracy’s approach to veterinary medicine is the belief that pets are family. She’s passionate about providing compassionate, individualised care and making each visit as positive and stress-free as possible for both her patients and the people who love them.

We’re very lucky to have Dr Tracy and her wealth of experience as part of the Tooronga team! Be sure to say hello if you see her around the hospital, alternatively you can book with her directly using the link in our bio or by calling Client Relations on (03) 9000 9828. 🐾

When you leave your pet with us, we know you’re leaving a member of your family and a piece of your heart in our care. Whether they’re staying with us for a procedure, recovering from surgery or spending time in hospital because they’re unwell, it’s completely understandable to wonder what happens after admission.

Behind the scenes, our Veterinary Nurses are there. Throughout their stay, our nurses regularly monitor our patients, checking their comfort, recovery and wellbeing and keeping a close eye on the little changes that can tell us how they’re feeling.

Nursing care is about more than observations and clinical monitoring. It’s adjusting their blankets if they’re cold, offering food when they’re ready, helping them settle into a comfortable position, sitting beside them for reassurance when they need it, and of course, providing plenty of pats and cuddles to those who want them. 💙

A key Tooronga difference is that we care for your pets with the same attention, compassion and kindness we would want for our own. You might not see all of the nursing care that happens once your pet disappears through those hospital doors, but we promise, there are some pretty special people back there looking after them.

And if you want to see for yourself, our doors are always open. 💙🐾

We know what you want as a pet parent. 🫵🏽

• To feel comfortable bringing your pet to the vet when something doesn’t seem quite right - whether they need treatment, investigation, or you simply need reassurance. 🩺

• To stay on top of the little things that keep them feeling their best, from nail trims to dental care, without every visit feeling like another unexpected expense. 🎀

• To give them the best chance at a long, healthy life through preventative care - with regular health checks, vaccinations, blood screening and early detection helping us spot changes before they become bigger problems. 🐾

• And when something unexpected does happen, you want to be able to visit an emergency vet hospital without hesitation. 🏥

That’s why we created The Buddy Club. 💙💙💙

Each year you’re a Buddy Club member, you’ll have access to exclusive benefits, including unlimited free weekday consultations, discounted weekend consultations, one free emergency triage appointment with Hawthorn East each year, up to six free nail trims, $200 towards dental procedures, a free blood test for every year you’re signed up, and so much more.

Senior bloods: what are we actually looking for?🩸

This beautiful lady is Cecelia, a 14-year-old Ragdoll who recently visited Dr Jemima for some of her regular senior healthcare. 🐱

Now that Cecelia is in her golden years, she has blood tests performed every six months. While she may be appearing perfectly well at home, regular blood testing gives us an opportunity to look at what’s happening inside and identify changes that aren’t always obvious from the outside. 👀

Cats in particular can be incredibly good at hiding signs of pain or illness, meaning changes may not become obvious until a condition has progressed. Senior blood tests can help us monitor things like kidney and liver function, blood glucose, proteins, electrolytes and red and white blood cells. They also give us valuable baseline results to compare over time, helping our veterinarians identify subtle changes or emerging health concerns earlier.

For Cecelia, there’s another important reason we keep a close eye on her results. She receives ongoing pain relief to keep her comfortable with arthritis, so regular blood tests allow Dr Jemima to monitor her overall health and make sure her body continues to tolerate her medication well. 💙

Cecelia also combined this visit with a little bit of a makeover! Her beautiful, heavy Ragdoll coat can make movement difficult, and her family has noticed she’s much more comfortable, mobile and lively when it’s removed. So a couple of times a year, Cecelia has a ‘lion clip’ performed safely under sedation, so she gets to take a nap and wake up pretty without worry! 🎀

At 14, Cecelia’s care is all about keeping her comfortable, monitoring the little things and helping her continue enjoying life. Do you have a golden girl or boy at home? Discuss regular blood screenings with one of our clinicians at your next visit!

How awesome are veterinary nurses? 💙

You’ll often spot our incredible nurses moving around the hospital caring for patients, assisting our veterinarians and making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes… but did you know you can also book an appointment directly with them? 🏥

Pictured here is our lovely Nurse Georgia with the equally lovely (and very handsome!) Grogu. 🐱✨

Our Veterinary Nurse Consults are a great option for many of your pet’s routine healthcare needs, including nail trims, weight checks, post-operative checks, parasite prevention, puppy and kitten desensitisation, nutritional support and plenty more.

Our nurses are highly skilled, knowledgeable animal care professionals and an integral part of your pet’s healthcare team. They’re also pretty wonderful at the pats, cuddles and reassurance that sometimes need to happen along the way. 🥰

Not sure whether your pet needs to see a Vet or whether a Nurse Consult will do the trick? Give our Client Relations team a call! We can help determine the most appropriate appointment and make sure you’re booked with the right member of our team.

And next time you see Georgia around the hospital, be sure to say hello! Grogu certainly seems pretty happy with his choice of company. 💙🐾

Are you running low on your pet’s medication? ❓❓

When you request medication or a prescription, there’s quite a bit happening behind the scenes before it reaches your paws. Every request is carefully reviewed by one of our veterinarians, who will assess your pet’s medical history to ensure the medication remains the most appropriate and safest treatment. Once approved, your medication is dispensed or your prescription prepared, often with the support of our wonderful veterinary nurses.

To help us give every request the care and attention it deserves, we kindly ask that you allow at least 3 days’ notice before your pet runs out of medication or their prescription expires. We like to beat this timeframe where we can, however our hospital is a dynamic environment where urgent and emergency cases must always take priority, which can impact turnaround times. 🏥

You can request repeat medications or prescriptions by:
📞 Calling us on (03) 9000 9828
📧 Emailing us at [email protected]

We require your pet to have been examined by one of our veterinarians within the last 6 months before we can provide repeat medication or a prescription. We know it’s not always convenient, but it’s all for your pet’s wellbeing and is considered best practice within the veterinary community. 💙

And because no Friday is complete without sharing a gorgeous patient… say hello to Brittany! (Doesn’t she literally look like the doggie emoji?!) 🐶

This beautiful Brittany Spaniel visited Dr Andrew today and completely stole our hearts during an impromptu photoshoot. She was the happiest, most joyful girl, with a tail that never seemed to stop wagging. Thank you for brightening our Friday Brittany - we can’t wait to see you next time! 🐾

Wishing our community a fabulous weekend! ✨
