Have you heard about bird flu reaching Australia?

You have probably read that the H5 Bird Flu virus has reached Australia. This version of the virus has caused severe and widespread outbreaks in poultry, wild birds, and terrestrial and marine mammals around the world.

Whereabouts in Australia has it been found?

Currently (as of July 8th, 2026) there are NO confirmed cases in Victoria. A small number of cases have been detected in migratory birds in Western Australia and NSW.

What are the symptoms?

The disease can cause death in infected animals and often shows as breathing, neurological or gastrointestinal issues.

Can other types of animals get it?

Yes, other mammals including humans can get the disease but transmission is rare and usually due to handling/eating or breathing in droplets associated with infected animals.

Cats seem particularly susceptible and should the disease be detected in Victoria, we would strongly recommend keeping cats indoors all the time.

Also best to walk dogs on leads when around birds, especially along the coast

What should I do if I suspect bird flu?

While the current risk in inner Melbourne is low, its a great idea to learn about the disease and what to do. Please have a look at the following information posters provided by the Australian Government.
