5 Things You Should Do When Starting Crate Training…

✅ Feed every meal in there — Skip the bowl on the floor for now. Every meal in the crate builds a fast, positive association without you having to do any extra work.

✅ Toss treats in throughout the day, no cue needed — Randomly chuck a treat in and walk away. Your dog learns the crate is a place good things randomly happen, not just where they get shut in.

✅ Leave the door open at first — Forcing the door shut early creates the exact panic you’re trying to avoid. Let them wander in and out on their own terms before you ever close it.

✅ Build duration in tiny increments — Seconds, not minutes, to start. Close the door, feed a few treats through the bars, open it again. Stretch the time slowly over days, not in one session.

✅ Practice when they’re already tired — A sleepy pup settles faster than one who’s wired. Crate sessions straight after a walk or play set them up to succeed, not fight it.

Crate training isn’t about confinement. It’s about giving your dog a space that feels safe 🧡

“My six month old puppy doesn’t listen to me at the park and always gets distracted”

This is SO common at this age as your puppy gets more confident with the outside world and finds everything very exciting.

Two things were missing: a long line (so he’s not practicing ignoring us off leash) and actually being worth coming back to (hello, high value treats) 🦴

Part 2 shows exactly how we put both into practice 👇 (dropping soon!)

5 things you should never do when using the crate

❌ Let them out when they’re whining — Every time you open the door on a whine, you’re teaching them whining works. Wait for even a 2 second pause, then open.

❌ Use the crate as punishment — The second it becomes “the bad place,” they’ll fight going in for life. It should only ever mean safety and calm.

❌ Jump straight to long stretches — Building duration too fast breaks trust. Start with minutes, not hours, and build up slowly.

❌ Open the door on excitement — Opening while they’re barking or scratching teaches chaos gets rewarded. Wait for calm, then release.

❌ Skip the pre-crate routine — No toilet break, no wind-down, straight into the crate sets them up to fail. Give them the best chance to settle first.

Stop walking your dog further. Start giving them more to think about. 🐾

Wait on the log → I hide treats → release to search. 5 minutes of this can be more tiring than a 30 minute walk.

Physical exercise tires the legs. Enrichment tires the mind. Dogs need both, but most owners are only doing one.
