Puppies don't all share one placenta. Each puppy develops with its own placenta and fetal membranes at an individual attachment site within the uterus. This means one puppy can experience a placental problem while its littermates remain completely unaffected, which helps explain why a single puppy in an otherwise healthy litter may sometimes be born compromised.
