Tidelands Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

Tidelands Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers We are a small breeder located in Melbourne, Victoria. We operate a small but focused breeding program, with an emphasis on health, temperament and versatility.

We are registered breeders with Dogs Australia (formerly the ANKC), and members of Dogs Victoria and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club of Victoria. We are dedicated to breeding Tollers according to the breed standard and are committed to producing Tollers that are not only well bred, but have exceptional temperaments and are a pleasure to own. We extensively health test and use all of th

e available DNA tests for Tollers, as well as hip, elbow and eye assessments. We currently have two beautiful Tollers, Biggie and Birdie. Our dogs compete in conformation showing and a number of different dog sports, and most weekends you can find us at shows or trials around Victoria. We are always happy to meet interested people at these events. We have no plans to breed until 2024. If this timing suits, please feel free to get in touch.

Tidelands High Spirits ~ Beanie 💜

Baby Cosmo is now Beanie and has joined Michael and Hannah at their lovely semi-rural property in the Dandenong Ranges. She is looking forward to many outdoor adventures exploring the walking trails and cafes of the beautiful hills region, and helping her mum and dad with the gardening.

Tidelands Life's A Peach ~ Sally 🩷

Princess Peaches becomes Sally and will be staying in Melbourne with Trevor and Kelsey. Sally will enjoy daily walks to her mum and dads pet-friendly office, and her weekends will be filled with hiking, camping, cycling and visits to the park and the beach.

Tidelands Main Squeeze ~ Lollie 🧡

Our little Juice, now Lollie, joins Linda and Kev and will be sharing her time between Melbourne and Phillip Island. Lollie will be joining Linda at work, and on the island will have her choice of beaches and a lovely pool to swim in - lucky girl! Linda and Kev's previous dogs include a Shepherd and a Golden Retriever so I'm confident they'll be able to handle the sass (and the hair!) of a Toller.

Tidelands Top Shelf ~ Waffle 💛

A bitter sweet day as the first of our Cheers babies headed off to their new homes. Ginny becomes Waffle and is living in Toller paradise on the Tasmanian coast with Matt, Elena and their three boys. She has plans to regularly join the family at their holiday home where they ride, run, fish and kayak so this was the perfect home for our busy girl. Thank you to Fi and the team at Pawmobile for delivering Waffle safely.

Ask Not for Whom the Dog Tolls. It Tolls for Duck.
Twenty-three years ago the Gazette commissioned Chet Jezierski to provide cover art for our July 2003 issue, welcoming the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever into the AKC Studbook. The original art now hangs in the AKC’s permanent collection. Of the several covers Chet has done for us over the years, this is a special favorite of his many fans at AKC.

The feature story inside the issue begins:

“In January the AKC Special Registration Services department circulated a terse memo: ‘The Board of Directors of the American Kennel Club, at its January 2003 meeting, approved the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever as eligible to compete in the Sporting Group at all events held on or after July 1, 2003.’

“They sure packed a lot of dog into one sentence. First, there's the Toller as show dog. The smallest of the retrievers, he's an eye-catching redhead—a jaunty little Jimmy Cagney with a spring in his step. But he's also the acutely intelligent obedience dog; and the nimble red tornado of the agility course; and the loyal family pet whose warm, soulful gaze would melt even the wariest mailman. Finally, he's the peerless gundog of the North Atlantic—quick, rugged, relentlessly eager— for generations prized as the perfect hunting buddy.

“In all, Nova Scotia’s greatest gift to America since smoked salmon.”—Bud Boccone

Despite their popularity in their native Canada, the Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever is still a rare sight in the UK. Lottie Gross finds out what makes them tick.

Last weekend we welcomed six beautiful babies from our Birdie (Ch. A2O Ch. Tollerprance Stillwater Brooke TK.S JC RN N.SPRD) sired by Ethan (Ch Glenmave Blood And Sand). Thank you to Glenda for letting me use Ethan for this litter. A big thank you also to Stuart, Jo and the team at Doncaster Veterinary Hospital for Birdie’s care during pregnancy, including coming in on Easter Sunday to ensure perfect timing for this breeding 🙏🏼

We have five girls and one boy. Birdie is being the best mama as always and everyone is thriving.

Because I’m a little bit mental, we also have a 7-week old newborn in the house so it’s a very busy, happy (and loud) home at the moment 😅

After just five shows, our beautiful Birdie finishes 2025 as the #1 Toller for Victoria in the Dogzonline Show Dog of the Year Competition.

And little Cookie wins the Victorian Rising Star competition for dogs up to 18 months old. She recently picked up a lovely 8 point Best of Breed at the Dogs Victoria Summer Spectacular under Mrs Wendy Maisey (Canada 🇨🇦) and is now about halfway to her Championship.
