For those curious about where the Centralian Blueys ended up. Here they are being successfully reproduced again as I thought they would by the one and only Blue Horizon Reptiles!! A huge effort continuing this species and getting more little kegs on legs out into the world.

One of the four King Skinks is off to a new home this weekend. I managed to convince Dane Blue Horizon Reptiles that he desperately needed one of these incredible Egernias 😂. The other three I’ll be keeping until the Victorian Herpetological Society (VHS) Expo next year to see how they develop!

There’s something so incredibly rewarding and satisfying about keeping animals outdoors and having them produce offspring with minimal intervention. I’ve had these King Skinks for a few years now and it seems patience was a virtue.

What has proven to be a pair of Kings started with one individual that I assumed was male and called “Elvis” who I worked with for months at a previous job before finally deciding to bring “him” home. What followed was many months of close work with this animal testing some socialisation boundaries and so on. An incredible experience.

Then I was given the honour and opportunity to work with animals from a late friend under the assumption that one of them was a male and the other two were unknowns.

Through trials and tribulations and a few different housing iterations, the current setup was created through learning of previous outdoor builds. A double door was built to avoid rushes for food, aviary style so I could stand comfortably inside the enclosure amongst some of the learnings.

The group was dwindled from 4 individuals to a cohesive pair. Except, “Elvis” didn’t appear to be as male as first thought and today’s revelation proves the theory.

I’m looking forward to hopefully a few more little ones being born over the coming days and raising some incredible little King Skinks.

These are a species found in southern Western Australia in a somewhat similar climate type to that of Melbourne. I’d spoken to some experienced keepers who had done the same and I’m so very rewarded to see this come full circle.

Some updated photos of the batch of Alpine Blotched Blue Tongues that I’m growing up at the moment. Looking forward to seeing these guys develop and grow, hopefully they’ll be living outside full time in about 7-8 months.

If anyone is looking for Alpines get in touch with Dane at Blue Horizon Reptiles!

What a blast! Victorian Herpetological Society (VHS) Reptile and Amphibian Expo 2025. New location, same amazing people and family atmosphere. For those who I got to catch up with it was great to see you all. Those of you who bought animals from Blue Horizon Reptiles probably had a chat to me as well!

This year’s expo definitely made me miss the vending side of things, so just wait and see what’s to come!

Dreams do come true folks

Since the ripe old age of 13 I’ve dreamt of being involved in a presentation for the Victorian Herpetological Society (VHS). Little did I know that it would come only a few years later. To say this was an honour is an understatement, truly a career highlight and one I will cherish forever. Thank you to all who reached out with messages of support and those who attended on the night.

To the next generation coming through, the key takeaways for me are these:
1. Talk to everyone you can, you’ll learn so much.
2. Back yourself, take some risks and even try something out of the ordinary.
3. Enjoy the ride along the way!
