Here's the gap nobody talks about: how a dog eats matters just as much as what they eat. Harder isn't better enrichment. It might be the opposite. 🐾

Psychologist Martin Seligman's research on learned helplessness found something important: when an animal faces a challenge it can't solve, again and again, it doesn't try harder — it stops trying altogether. Even later, when the challenge becomes solvable, it still won't try.

That's not enrichment. That's frustration wearing an enrichment label.

Watch your dog at the bowl. Are they engaged, tail loose and curious? Or stuck, frustrated, slowly giving up?

If your dog gives up, you haven't made mealtime better — you've gone too far. The goal was never difficulty for its own sake. It's engagement your dog can actually win.

A challenge your dog can't solve isn't enrichment. It's just a bowl they've learned to stop trying with.

1 in 4 Labradors carry a gene mutation that means they never actually feel full. 🧬

In 2016, Cambridge researchers led by Dr. Eleanor Raffan found a deletion in the POMC gene — the gene responsible for the hormones that tell your dog's brain "you've had enough." In dogs with this mutation, that signal doesn't fire properly.

It's found in ~25% of Labradors and two-thirds of flat-coated retrievers. Nearly 40 other breeds tested — none had it.

A 2024 follow-up study found something stranger: these dogs don't need more food to feel full. They feel full at the same point as other dogs — they just get hungry again faster, and burn ~25% less energy at rest.

So next time your Labrador begs 5 minutes after dinner, that's not bad behaviour. That's biology.
