Why We Still Have a Physical Shop (Even Though Most of What We Do Is Online)

These days, about 90–95% of our business happens online.

But Fish Hut Aqua was never built to be just a website.
And it was never meant to be just about transactions.

For those who may not know — I’m Nishal, the face you see at the shop whenever you come in. 🤓

This place has always been more than a business to me.
It’s about the regulars who pop in for a look and stay for a chat.
The locals who’ve supported us since day one.
The walk-in customers who share their tank progress like family.
The familiar faces I genuinely look forward to seeing every week.😇

Even if in-store was only 1% of what we do, that 1% means everything.
That’s our community — and that’s why we keep the doors open.😇

At the same time, running a physical shop comes with very real costs — rent, power, water, and everything it takes to maintain healthy systems for the fish. These overheads are significantly higher than operating online, which is why pricing and availability can sometimes differ between online and in-store.

Because we operate so heavily online, you might occasionally see something listed as “in stock” on the website, come into the shop, and it’s not physically on the shelf. Many items are fulfilled directly from our holding systems, partner facilities, or allocated from breeding stock, and are often already reserved or moving through orders before we’d even have time to bring them into the retail space.

If you’re ever unsure, you can always use our online chat function — I personally respond to any questions about in-store availability, pricing, or anything else before you make the trip.

A small heads-up:
In the coming weeks, we’ll be moving to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday trading only.
This allows us to continue serving our local community while balancing the growing online side of the business — and, simply put, life has to go on too.

Online allows us to grow and serve customers across Australia.
But the shop stays open for the people right here who made Fish Hut Aqua what it is.

As long as you keep walking through that door, we’ll keep opening it.
