๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‘ Spring has sprung at Meadows Veterinary Centre! ๐Ÿ„๐ŸŒผ

With the busy spring season upon us, our team is here to support you and your livestock through all the challenges โ€” and joys โ€” that come with it!

๐Ÿ‘ Sick spring lambs, kids, cria & calves โ€” from those needing a little extra TLC to more serious cases, weโ€™re here to help get them back on their feet.

๐Ÿ„ Calvings, lambings, unpackings, kiddings & obstetric calls โ€” when things donโ€™t go to plan, give us a call and we can provide assistance when you need it most.

๐Ÿด๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ Castrations โ€” we can assist with castrations of colts, bulls, bucks, machos and rams, including surgical options where appropriate.

๐Ÿ’‰ Vaccinations โ€” helping you put the right preventative health plans in place for your herd or flock.

๐Ÿชฑ Faecal egg counts & worming advice โ€” making sure your parasite control program is targeted and effective, rather than simply reaching for the drench.

And pictured here is Thunder ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿค, who came into Meadows Veterinary Centre for a surgical castrate. He was waking up calm, warm and comfortable โ€” just what we like to see after a procedure! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Spring is a busy time on farm, so donโ€™t hesitate to get in touch if you have concerns about your livestock or would like to discuss a preventative health plan.

๐Ÿ SNAKES ARE ON THE MOVE! โš ๏ธ
Weโ€™ve seen 3 snake bites in pets at Meadows Veterinary Centre in the past week, so weโ€™re urging pet owners to be extra vigilant.

With increased snake activity, keep pets close and avoid long grass, scrub, rocky areas and other places where snakes may be hiding. ๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿšจ Know the signs of a snake bite
Signs can vary, but may include:
โ€ข Sudden weakness or collapse
โ€ข Vomiting or drooling
โ€ข Trembling or shaking
โ€ข Difficulty walking or wobbliness
โ€ข Dilated pupils
โ€ข Rapid or difficult breathing
โ€ข Bleeding or swelling
โ€ข Paralysis or inability to move

Be aware animals can collapse and then appear to make a full recovery - still seek immediate veterinary attention.

โš ๏ธ A snake bite is an emergency. If you suspect your pet has been bitten, keep them as calm and still as possible and seek veterinary attention immediately. Donโ€™t wait for symptoms to develop โ€” they can deteriorate rapidly.

If youโ€™re concerned your pet may have encountered a snake, contact Meadows Veterinary Centre straight away. โ˜Ž๏ธ8388 3455

Obstetric calls are always one of our favourites at Meadows Veterinary Centre โ€” especially when everything goes so well! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฉถ

Dr Zoรซ & Nurse Loren recently attended this clever girl who was having a little trouble lambingโ€ฆ and what a surprise she had in store โ€” triplets! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Three healthy little lambs and one very proud mum. What a beautiful outcome! ๐Ÿฅฐ

โš ๏ธ CANINE PARVO VIRUS ALERT โš ๏ธ

While the Adelaide Hills is usually considered a low-risk area for canine parvovirus, we have had two positive cases at our clinic in the past two weeks. These pets have been out in the local community.

Please help protect your pets by:
๐Ÿพ Ensuring vaccinations are up to date
๐Ÿพ Keeping puppies who are not yet fully immunised at home and away from areas where other dogs have been

If your pet develops vomiting, diarrhoea, inappetence (not wanting to eat) or lethargy, please call the clinic for advice and let us know about their symptoms before coming in.

Weโ€™re sharing this information so our local community can stay informed and help keep our pets safe. ๐Ÿ’™

** CARING FOR ORPHAN LIVESTOCK**

How cute is Thunder ๐Ÿฉถ๐Ÿ‘. This little guy accompanied his sister Snow for a visit for a chest infection. We were all besotted!

With Winter lambing and the recent cold, wet and windy weather we have been seeing a large number of orphans in need of help.

Deciding to take on an orphan, particularly one that is under 24hours can be extremely challenging and requires significant commitment, just like caring for any newborn baby. For these tiny babies, minutes are like hours and they can deteriorate and die very quickly.

A few key tips for caring for orphaned neonates:

- They must have colostrum only for the first 24 hours. This can be milked from their mother (even if deceased), milked from another animal with a newborn or made up from powdered colostrum (for example Impact)
- Babies need to be fed every 2-3 hours, including overnight.
- The first 24hours is critical. If the baby is showing dehydration, diarrhoea/scouring, straining to toilet, weakness or lack of appetite you need to contact a veterinarian.
- Babies need to be kept in a clean, warm, dry environment.
- Once baby has survived the first 24 hours you can transition to the correct powdered milk replacer for their species. Do NOT feed powdered cows milk or bottled milk from supermarkets.
- Hygiene is extremely important, keep bottles and feeding equipment clean.
- Only feed from bottles with flow control. Never force feed or syringe feed. Do not attempt tube feeding unless you have been properly instructed on how to do so.
- Make sure you can provide an appropriate long term home for the animal.
- Make sure you address dehorning, castration, vaccination and drenching at the appropriate times (Usually required in the first week of life)

We are here to help if you need us. We will also take on unwanted orphans.
