Affectionately known as ‘Berners,’ Bernese Mountain Dogs are good-natured, affectionate and loyal companions, easily recognised by their smiling expression and beautiful tri-coloured coat.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are excellent family dogs, with their patient, gentle temperament, goofy personality and protective instincts.

Originally used by farmers in the Swiss Alps, Berners still retain their muscular build and strength to this day. They almost went extinct in the mid-1800s, but the efforts of dedicated individuals helped to reverse the decline and revive the breed.

Due to their thick double coats, Berners require daily brushing and regular grooming. They also need vigorous daily exercise of at least thirty minutes to keep them healthy and happy. They make great companions on walks and outdoor adventures, although their thick coat means they are susceptible to heatstroke and must be kept cool.

Part of the charm of Berners is that they mature slowly, meaning the puppy years last a little longer. They are also quite soft emotionally and can be easily hurt, so when training, it’s important to use positive reinforcement rather than harsh scolding.

These delightful dogs make wonderful companions for families and individuals, thriving in loving homes. If you have a Berner, we’d love to meet them! Feel free to share a photo in the comments.

Our Road to Rescue Challenge with SavourLife is already having a huge impact on animals from rural pounds.

Thanks to your support, pets like Fanta can have a second chance 💙

We're so excited to see the impact that our Road to Rescue Challenge with Pets Domain is having on animals from rural or regional pounds 🧡

Fanta from Stray to Stay was one of the first pups transported to safety as a result of our challenge. Thanks to an initial donation made by SavourLife and Pets Domain, they were able to transport Fanta from Bamaga to Cairns for emergency vet care after she was bitten by another dog and obtained a fracture to her face.

This ‘Freedom Ride Ticket’ helped save Fanta’s life as infection was impacting her breathing significantly.

So, what is a ‘Freedom Ride Ticket’?
A Freedom Ride Ticket represents the funding required to transport one rescue pet from rural or regional pounds into the safety of a rescue group.
Each ticket helps to cover the transport costs that give a dog or cat the opportunity for a second chance.
1 Freedom Ride Ticket = 1 rescue pet transported to safety 🐾 ✈️

How can you help?
Help us unlock more Freedom Ride Tickets! Every SavourLife purchase made at Pets Domain during September helps us move closer to our target and helps more rescue pets reach safety 🧡

This September, every purchase of SavourLife dog and cat food at Pets Domain will help fund Freedom Rides to transport 100 pets from rural pounds into care.

This is your chance to make a real difference for pets in need - and feed your own pet a premium meal at the same time!

Today we were able to hand over 19 bags of SavourLife dry pet food to Mareeba Animal Refuge 💙

We'd like to thank everyone who bought SavourLife dry food at our recent National Adoption Day - we were blown away by your support, and together you bought over 150kg of pet food!

SavourLife generously donated the equivalent bags to the rescue, and today we had the priviledge of handing over the donations. Thanks to you, all this quality food is going to cats and dogs in need. 🐾

🐾💛 THANK YOU & CONGRATULATIONS! 💛🐾
What an incredible National Pet Adoption Day!
A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event—whether you adopted a rescue animal, purchased a bag of food through the SavourLife donation program, volunteered your time, or simply stopped by to show your support.
Every adoption gives a deserving animal the loving home they've been waiting for, and every bag of food purchased helps us continue caring for the animals in our refuge. Your kindness and generosity make a real difference. 💛
A massive congratulations to our lucky adoptees and their wonderful new families! Thank you for opening your hearts and homes to rescue animals and giving them the second chance they deserve.
Together, you've helped make this event a wonderful success and reminded us just how amazing our community is. We couldn't do it without you. 💕
We would also like to thank the incredible people and businesses who helped make the day possible.
A huge thank you to Carissa from MiniBou Fotografia for capturing so many beautiful memories throughout the day, and to the wonderful team at Sweet N Sanity for keeping everyone supplied with delicious treats and coffee. Thank you also to Dan from Mareeba Floor Covering for generously donating our runway, and to Vivienne Kennett for the use of her show cages.
Special thanks to Vicki for bringing our Fashion Show idea to life and helping organise every step of the event.
Most importantly, thank you to our amazing volunteers and staff at Mareeba Animal Refuge. From setting up, packing down, and transporting, without your assistance we would not be able to host these wonderful events.

And the biggest thank you goes to Felicity Pollard who works tirelessly behind the scenes to help make these events possible so each and every animal that passes through the refuge has a second chance at their forever homes.
