On Monday 27 July, Australia will conduct a national test of the new AusAlert emergency warning system. At the scheduled time mobile phones, some smartwatches and tablets will emit a very loud siren like alert.

Plan ahead if you will be around horses or any animals for that matter. Please share this information within your horse circles.

Under the guidance and expertise of Dr Chloe, our clinic has a comprehensive plan in place and is prepared to respond in line with the current avian influenza guidelines.

Dr Chloe worked with DEECA during the Golden Plains avian influenza outbreak in 2020 and the Euroa outbreak in 2025. She has also completed the DEECA Poultry Emergency Disease Course, bringing valuable experience and expertise to our team.

Our clinic is continuing to accept injured and unwell birds.

If you are bringing a bird to the clinic, you must call ahead before arriving. Once you arrive, please keep the bird in your vehicle until a member of our team provides further instructions. These precautions help protect our patients, staff, and the wider community while ensuring your bird receives the appropriate care.

Something to consider for adding calories without huge feed volumes.

Oil! Not the first thing that traditionally comes to mind when feeding horses, but it has become a common fixture in modern diets.

Why do we feed oil (i.e. fats)?

- To add more digestible energy (calories) to the diet for horses that need it, without making the feed bigger in volume, or adding starch/sugar that could cause digestive or metabolic issues. Particularly useful for older horses, but also a great "cool" energy source for horses in work.

- To provide omega fatty acids for various anti-inflammatory and health effects. Not all oils are created equal here!

- For coat shine. Pretty much any liquid oil will put a shine on your horse's coat - regardless of omega 3:6 balance or source. Keep in mind that a dull coat may also be a sign of mineral imbalance or underlying health issues - a healthy horse should still have some shine without being fed oil!
