Some dogs weigh 75kg! Gentle giant, Ghost has been coming in for regular bandage changes. Ghost is a beautiful Great Dane. As he towers above the consult table, we are fortunate that he is happy to lie on the floor during his treatment (with belly rubs).

On this lovely rainy day, we were fortunate to see this beautiful Rouen drake, Julian, up close. A very regal chap. Thanks for visiting, Julian.

Over the past seven years, the team at Manilla Veterinary Clinic has been privileged to be involved in a groundbreaking study driven by the passion and dedication the Peake family of Bowen Stud and Bowen Genetics has for the beef industry.

Recently, we were fortunate enough to attend the Bowen Genetics Conference, where the Peake family shared the exciting results of their pioneering research identifying genes linked to eating quality traits in their stud Angus, Hereford, and Wagyu cattle.

The Peake family are true visionaries within the beef industry, committing immense personal resources and unwavering dedication to advancing innovation in Australian beef production. Working alongside world-renowned meat scientist Aduli Malau-Aduli, they are helping uncover technologies with the potential to propel the industry into exciting new territory.

Their passion, commitment, and forward thinking are truly inspiring, and it has been an honour for our team to be part of this incredible journey.

Here at Manilla Vet Clinic we are very happy with our new acquisition - a lovely original work in ink and pencil by local artist, Tara Jones. Some of us were having lunch out of the clinic at Warm Discussions and were admiring Tara’s works in the window of the Manilla Folder. We hope you enjoy it too, if you’re in our reception or waiting room.
Big thanks to our model Dr Carrie for allowing me to take a picture of her in front of it for scale (Dr Carrie is not comfortable in front of the camera 😂)

🐾🐯 Tigger, our local Maine C**n mate came in again for another visit! 🐯🐾

This gorgeous giant was a perfect gentleman for his annual health check and vaccination 💉❤️

Maine C**ns are famous for their playful personalities, giant fluffy tails and love of human company — and we absolutely loved seeing him again 😻

If you’ve recently welcomed a kitten into the family, now is the perfect time to book their vaccination appointment with the team.

🌾🐂 Dry weather management tips for feeding cattle 🐄🌾

With the dry conditions continuing across our region, now is a good time to reassess your feeding plan and herd management to help protect both cattle condition and your operation long term.

Some important points to consider:

• Define your production goals and market, and honestly assess your infrastructure plus the physical and mental capacity needed for ongoing feeding
• Pregnancy test and sell empty cows
• Cull older cattle where appropriate
• Draft cattle by Body Condition Score (BCS) and feed lower BCS cattle and heifers separately. Aiming to maintain cattle at a BCS of 3
• Perform a pasture assessment — calculate grazing days remaining, carrying capacity and water security
• Assess whether supplement or substitute feeding is required
• Review feed quality and feeding costs — how long can feeding be sustained comfortably? The NSW DPI feed cost calculator can be a valuable tool
• Set up designated feeding areas to improve efficiency and reduce cattle walking energy expenditure
• Try to maintain some ground cover so paddocks can better absorb rainfall when it arrives
• Consider early weaning calves at 3–5 months of age to reduce nutritional demand on cows
• Begin creep feeding calves where possible — this can improve calf weights while reducing pressure on lactating cows.
• Creep feeding also helps to establish rumen flora and decreasing the stress of weaning.
• Feed using feeders where possible to reduce wastage and help minimise disease spread from spoiled feed. Rubber conveyor mats can also work very well.

These seasons can be challenging, and planning ahead can make a significant difference to both livestock performance and feed costs.

If you have any questions or would like assistance with feed planning, herd management or dry season strategies, please contact the clinic 📞

UPDATE: Kenny and Simmo are safely back home!

Hello! We’ve been handed in to the clinic but as we have no microchips, the nice ladies don’t know who to call to take us home. Can you help them get us home?

Smokey came in for his big operation today✂️🐰… and handled it like a pro 💪

Castration isn’t just about preventing unexpected litters — it also helps reduce spraying, aggression, and keeps your bunny happier and healthier long-term 🥕💚

If you’ve got a rabbit at home and have been wondering about desexing, feel free to chat with our team — we’re always happy to help!
