Another visit to Arundel Riding for the Disabled

I headed back to RDA this week to treat four of their lovely horses, including two who I’ve had the pleasure of treating previously.

As always, they were all absolute sweethearts to work with. Two of the horses were showing quite a bit of soreness and tension when I assessed them, but it was lovely to see such a noticeable improvement in their comfort following their sessions.

It’s always rewarding to see these horses relax and soften during treatment, especially knowing how much they do for the riders they support. 💛

I’m looking forward to continuing to work with these lovely horses and supporting them in feeling their best.

🐴 A lovely follow-up with this sweet girl 💛

A couple of weeks ago I met this beautiful mare who was showing some soreness through her back, along with noticeable clicking through her jaw.

She was an absolute pleasure to treat and remained calm and relaxed throughout her acupuncture session, happily standing while the needles did their thing.

I checked in with her a few days later and it was lovely to hear that the clicking had almost completely disappeared, and she also seemed much more comfortable overall.

Every horse responds differently, and there can be many reasons behind changes like these, but seeing a horse become more comfortable is always such a rewarding part of what I do.

I’m looking forward to continuing to support this lovely girl and seeing how she progresses with her young rider.

Sometimes the biggest goal is simply helping a horse feel comfortable.

I recently visited this lovely boy after he had returned from the trainer with the decision made that he would be a companion-only horse due to ongoing muscle discomfort.

During his assessment, he was particularly sensitive through his back. When a needle was placed over one of the more reactive areas, you could see an immediate response as he dipped away from the sensation.

Despite being uncomfortable, he was such a sweet and gentle boy. He never tried to kick or lash out and remained calm while the needles were in and doing their thing.

When it was time to remove one of the needles from the more reactive area, it came out in a very noticeable twisted, corkscrew shape.

Afterwards, I gave him a gentle massage over the areas treated, and the change in his expression was beautiful to see. His eyes had softened and he seemed genuinely content.

And then came my favourite part — once I finished, he wandered off and found himself a nice sandy spot for a long, happy roll. 🥰

Whether a horse is competing at the highest level or simply enjoying life as a companion, they all deserve to feel as comfortable as possible in their bodies.

Not every horse starts out loving acupuncture — and that’s okay.

Recently I treated a young horse who was having his very first acupuncture session.
As the needles were placed, some of the very tight muscles began to grab and move with them before I had even finished the treatment. Because he was quite sore through the area, he reacted by moving around, kicking out, and trying to get away. A few of the needles popped out almost immediately and came out noticeably bent, showing just how much tension those muscles were holding.

Once those needles were removed and I gave him a moment to settle, his sweet nature quickly returned. He happily accepted gentle rubbing and massage over the treated area and became much more relaxed and comfortable.

One of the loveliest parts of the session was that, despite being unsure about the needles, he spent much of the treatment standing quietly and licking my hand.

Young horses, especially those experiencing discomfort and having their first acupuncture session, can sometimes be uncertain at the beginning. Patience, reassurance, and listening to the horse are always the most important part of the process.

By the end of the session, he was back to being the calm, sweet(but also ratbag haha) young horse his owner knows so well.

A lovely afternoon catching up with two previous client horses last week.

This sweet boy was back for a follow-up after a recent treatment for tight hindquarter muscles, which had helped him a lot. Since starting a little more work, he was feeling tense through his back, particularly around the saddle area.

He was once again an absolute gentleman, spending most of the session quietly resting, and a few of his needles even came out completely curved, showing just how much tension those muscles had been holding.

His paddock mate was a beautiful retired older girl who was a little tense to begin with, but she mostly just seemed to enjoy the whole session. By the end she was relaxed, soft and very happy to be pampered with a gentle massage afterwards. 💛

It’s always so rewarding to see horses settle into their treatments in different ways — some completely switch off and rest, while others simply enjoy the attention and comfort.

💛 A lovely afternoon back at Arundel Park Riding for the Disabled 💛

I treated two more of their wonderful horses today.

One was so relaxed during his acupuncture session that he fell asleep, and the other was drooling and leaning heavily into his massage by the end of treatment.

Seeing horses become this comfortable and relaxed is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

If anyone is able to help Arundel Park Riding for the Disabled I am sure they would really appreciate any support, whether through volunteering, donations, sponsoring a horse, or even a feed voucher. They’ve had a particularly tough few weeks, and every little bit helps. 💛

💛 A special full-circle moment today 💛

Today I had the privilege of visiting Arundel Park Riding for the Disabled and donating my time by treating a couple of their wonderful horses with acupuncture.

As a child, I spent countless weekends at this centre, and it was one of the places where I learnt so much about horse handling, patience, kindness and the incredible connection between horses and people. Being able to return years later and give back in a small way felt very special.

I wasn’t in a position to donate financially, so I chose to donate my services instead. It was lovely to spend time with these beautiful horses and support a centre that gave me so much growing up.

I’ve shared a few photos from today with permission from Arundel Park Riding for the Disabled, and I’ll tag their page so anyone interested can easily find and support the amazing work they do.

Every step towards comfort is worth celebrating.

This lovely senior boy recently injured himself after becoming caught in his rug, leaving him with muscle tension through his neck and shoulder, as well as a cut that is still healing.

During his assessment, he was quite sensitive through those areas, but as his acupuncture treatment progressed, you could see him begin to relax. By the end of the session, the horse that had been guarding those sore muscles was happily leaning into a gentle massage and enjoying every minute of it.

Watching horses become more comfortable and start to trust touch again is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

While recovery takes time and every horse responds differently, I'm hopeful this handsome boy is well on his way to feeling more like himself again. 💛

A yawn says more than words ever could...

This gorgeous Friesian came in with muscle tension through his back and poll.

As his acupuncture treatment progressed, it was lovely to watch him completely unwind. His body softened, his eyes relaxed, and before long, the yawns began. 😴

Yawning, along with other signs such as licking, chewing and a softened expression, can often be seen as horses begin to relax during treatment.

Every horse is unique, but seeing them let go of tension and become more comfortable is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
