Avian Influenza is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects birds. While it can occasionally spread to people and other animals, the risk to the general public remains low.
Pets can be at risk if they come into contact with sick or deceased birds or contaminated environments, so it is important to keep curious noses and paws away from wildlife.

𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙘:
➡ If you have found an injured or unwell bird, 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 before heading to the clinic.
➡ You may notice our team wearing additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This is simply an extra precaution to protect both our staff and our feathered patients.
➡ For all other appointments, it is business as usual! You can continue to book online or give our friendly team a call.

We love celebrating our patients' birthdays, and sweet Bailey celebrated her 12th birthday with us here at GVH 😊

Birthday treats were off the menu as Bailey spent her special day recovering after having an incredible 26 teeth extracted! She took it all in her stride and was showered with plenty of love, cuddles, and birthday cheer from our team.

Birds, reptiles, and small mammals are experts at hiding signs of illness, so specialised, species-specific diagnostic testing is essential for early detection and treatment.

Common diagnostic tests include:
💉 Comprehensive blood tests (CBC and biochemistry)
💩 Faecal examinations
🩻 Imaging such as radiographs (X-rays) and ultrasonography

Our experienced team understands the unique handling needs of exotic pets and always prioritises their safety and welfare. We use supportive measures such as pre-warming, oxygen supplementation, and sedation when clinically appropriate to reduce stress and ensure safe, efficient sample collection.

You also play an important role in monitoring your pet's health at home by:
➡️ 𝗪𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 - weight loss is often an early sign of illness
➡️ 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 - watch for changes in the consistency or frequency of urine and faeces
➡️ 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 - look for changes in appetite, activity, or increased lethargy and hiding
➡️ 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - for reptiles, ensure temperature, humidity, and lighting are appropriate

Led by our experienced veterinary nurse and DELTA-Certified trainer Page, our Puppy Preschool program will help you understand how your puppy learns, how to communicate effectively, and how to build a strong, positive relationship from the very beginning.

With education for both puppies and pawrents, we'll cover key practical training skills, and topics such as body language, socialisation, confidence building, desensitisation, troubleshooting common puppy behaviours and more, setting you and your puppy up for a lifetime of success and helping your puppy learn that visiting the vet = a fun, positive experience!

🐾 Australian Cattle Dogs are often nicknamed "Heelers" because they herd cattle by gently nipping at their heels

For the month of June, the Greenhills Veterinary Hospital team was proud to take part in The Push-Up Challenge - Australia. Our team completed hundreds of push-ups and squats daily, while raising funds and encouraging conversations around mental health, because looking after the wellbeing of those who care for our animals is just as important as caring for our patients.

This year, we are proud to support Sophie's Legacy, a charity dedicated to improving mental health and wellbeing within the veterinary profession.
We raised a total of $580.00!! A small but meaningful contribution to an amazing cause. 🥰

While veterinary teams work tirelessly to care for our beloved animals, many face significant emotional challenges behind the scenes. Long hours, compassion fatigue, emotional stress, and the pressures of the profession contribute to higher rates of mental health struggles and su***de within the veterinary industry.

Sophie's Legacy was established to create awareness, provide support, and drive positive change for veterinary professionals across Australia. Through education, advocacy, and mental health initiatives, the charity is helping to build a healthier and more sustainable future for those who dedicate their lives to caring for animals.
