🐾 PUPPIES GROW FAST! ✈️

Take a look at a Great Dane puppy between 6 weeks and 6 months old. In just a few months, that cute little 6 week old becomes a tall, long-legged giant!

This matters when you're booking a flight, because the crate has to suit your puppy's size on the day they travel, not the size they were when you bought them or when you first asked for a quote.

🌏 It's especially important for exports. Puppies generally can't leave Australia before 3 months of age, and for the USA the earliest is 6 months. By then, a big breed puppy is a very different size to the tiny pup in the breeder's photos!

A crate that's too small on travel day can mean:
❌ The airline refusing to fly your puppy
⏳ Delays getting them to their new home
💸 Extra costs when a bigger replacement crate has to be sourced at the last minute
📅 Having to reschedule the flight

How to avoid it:
📏 Measure your puppy as close to travel day as you can, and let us know if they've had a growth spurt since you booked
💡 Have your puppy sitting down when you measure their height
📐 Body length (nose to base of tail)
⚖️ Current weight

🐾 "JUST A TERRIER" ISN'T A SIZE! ✈️

A conversation we have all the time when booking a flight:

Us: "What breed is your dog?"
Client: "A Kelpie cross terrier. He's 22kg."
Us: "Which type of terrier?"
Client: "You know... a terrier!" 😅

Fair enough, but "terrier" covers a LOT of ground. The tiny Yorkshire Terrier is the smallest of the terriers, while the Airedale Terrier is the tallest and towers over the rest. Throw a Kelpie into the mix and the final size could be almost anything!

Breed and weight alone can't tell us which crate your dog needs. And getting the crate wrong can cause real headaches on travel day:

❌ The airline can refuse to fly your dog if the crate is too small or the wrong size
⏳ Delays getting your dog to their destination
💸 Extra costs when a replacement crate has to be sourced at the last minute
📅 Having to reschedule the flight, which can mean more waiting and more cost

A few minutes of measuring now saves a lot of stress later. Please have these ready when you book:
📏 Height while sitting (floor to the top of the head or ears, whichever is higher)
📐 Body length (nose to base of tail)
⚖️ Weight
🐕 Breed or mix, as best you know it

✈️ SAME WEIGHT. DIFFERENT CRATE. 🐩🐶

Here's a question we get a lot: "My dog weighs the same as my friend's dog, so why is my flight quote different?"

Take a Standard Poodle and a British Bulldog. They can weigh exactly the same, but they're built very differently. The Poodle is tall and leggy, while the Bulldog is low, wide and stocky. That means they need different size airline containers.

And the container is what the airline prices on:
🔴 Virgin Australia: flights are priced on the total weight of your dog AND the crate
🔴 Qantas and international flights: priced on the volume of the crate, not your pet's weight

So a bigger crate costs more, whichever airline you fly with. 🐾
