ABOUT US

CRZ is a 100% voluntary organisation made up of a small group of cat lovers dedicated to improving the welfare of cats in Zimbabwe. This is achieved through the TNR Program (trap, neuter, return), FKP (foster kitten program) and the FFF (ferals for farmers) program. OUR VISION
To have fewer cats and kittens on the streets. To educate communities about the benefits of having cats and their place in the ecosystem, along with basic cat care. To educate businesses about basic cat care for feral cats on their premises. To run sterilisation programs in impoverished communities to improve the health and wellbeing of cats

TRAP NEUTER RETURN (“TNR”) WORK

We are dedicated to the management of the cat overpopulation crisis in Zimbabwe through an effective and humane TNR program. This is achieved by sterilising, vaccinating and ear tipping (for identification purposes) feral cats. TNR benefits everyone because it:
‱ humanly reduces the feral cat population on the streets
‱ drastically improves cats’ quality of life as it eliminates reproductive stress
caused by continual mating and pregnancies.
‱ reduces territorial stress and improves the cats’ health and by reducing their
chances of developing cancers and contracting cat diseases
‱ reduces noise from fighting and mating activities.
‱ reduces smells from the territorial spraying of urine.
‱ prevents the spread of rabies. The cats are returned to where they were caught originally and continue to live a peaceful life whilst keeping the rodent population down.

This weeks’ TNR & Sterilisations:

A crazy week for the girls as they TNR’d a total of 22 cats from 5 different locations.

At the start of the week Katie and Lorna travelled to Goromonzi in partnership with The Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary to TNR 2 colonies on farms in the area. They trapped a mum & her 4 kittens on one farm and 1 female & 3 males from another. Both adult females were pregnant again- but were successfully spayed. A huge thank you to Twala Trust for contacting us before another cycle of kittens appeared at these farms. We are very proud to be apart of this Happy Cat Club project and very happy to have passed on our knowledge of TNR to your team. Thank you to 24hr vet surgery also for performing the sterilisations and to the farm owners for looking after the cats. Teamwork is the only way we can improve animal welfare for future generations.

Back in Harare Lorna received an emergency call regarding kittens that had been found inside an old age home facility - after the surprise rain on Monday night a mumma cat had moved her 10 day old kittens inside for protection. However they couldn’t remain there. A very kind resident safely placed the kittens into a box and put them outside where mum cat was going in and out of the room. Lorna arrived and set traps for the mum - surprisingly she came around the corner very quickly on her way back to her kittens - she was trapped within minutes. Mum and kittens are now safely in our care at Harare Central Veterinary Surgery HCVS . Mum will be spayed next week and once recovered she will be moved with her kittens into our one and only enclosure so she can safely bring up her babies. They will enter our foster system once old enough and mum will be returned home where she is being looked after.

Lorna set more traps at the old age facility and managed to trap another female and 2 big toms. Lorna also TNR’d a female from Borrowdale.

Katie trapped a colony of 9 across 2 properties in Avondale - she TNR’d 3 adult females, 3 males and 3 teenage females. One adult female was pregnant again but spayed successfully.

CRZ also assisted 4 owners this week sterilise their cats - 2 males and 2 females.

This brings our total sterilised to date to 3,980

Did you know there is a difference between a stray & a feral?
🐈 A stray cat is typically a cat who lived indoors and/or was socialised to people at some point in its life, but has left or lost its home, or was abandoned and no longer has regular human contact
🐈 A feral cat is an unsocialised outdoor cat who has either never had any physical contact with humans, or human contact has diminished over enough time that the cat is no longer accustomed to touch.

How we define the cat that keeps turning up on your property determines how we proceed with trapping that cat. If you have any questions or need advice on the strays or ferals in your area please contact us we are always happy to help!

This weeks’ TNR & Sterilisations :

An unexpectedly busy week this week for the team. Despite the public holiday we managed to trap 22 cats from 8 different locations.

Katie TNR’d a female from Monavale, a male from Parktown and a male and a female with 3 young kittens from Bluffhill. She also TNR’d 2 females and a male from Ridgeview. One female was pregnant but successfully spayed.

Lorna TNR’d a female from Kensington - she decided to uplift her remaining 3 healthy kittens as 1 had been attacked by an aggressive cat in the area leading to irreversible spinal damage. Unfortunately this kitten had to be humanely euthanised - a decision we never take lightly.

Lorna also TNR’d a female and 2 males from Highlands, and a female and her 4 kittens from a church in the Avenues. The mumma cat was back in heat again, so very good timing!! Lorna and Katie teamed up to trap another 6 cats from Belgravia - 2 young females and 4 males.

The team also assisted 2 owners sterilise their 2 females - one from Concession and one from Mount Pleasant - bringing our total for this week to 24!

Total sterilised to date is now 3,954

We had 5 kittens enter our foster system in August - 3 of which were found at a stables - there was no sign of mum and the kittens were in visible distress. A single male kitten also came to us from Greystone Park after being found all alone in someone’s yard - crying from hunger.

The girls also uplifted a kitten from the commercial farm they were trapping at. He was visibly dirty, malnourished and needed some TLC.

Four different families adopted from us during August. One family took all 3 babies from one litter that were raised from 10 days old - we are so incredibly grateful to them for wanting to keep these bonded babies together. Two other families also adopted a pair each - which we always recommend. And a very kind family adopted the kitten who was found with glue all over her body - she is now looking absolutely beautiful.

We can’t begin to express how much it means to us when people open their hearts and homes to rescue kittens - not only from our system but also the other animal welfare organisations in Harare and beyond. When you adopt you are saving more lives than you think - not only do you save the lives of the animals you adopt but also the ones who can now take their place and be helped and rehabilitated back to health. So thank you!!
