LIVESTOCK DISEASES YOU SHOULD NEVER TREAT YOURSELF

As a farmer, you want to act fast when animals get sick, but some diseases are super dangerous, highly contagious, or even fatal to humans. They must be handled ONLY by a qualified veterinarian or reported to authorities right away.

▪︎ HIGH-RISK DISEASES THAT NEED STRICT VETERINARY INTERVENTION

1. ANTHRAX

- SIGNS
Sudden death, bleeding from nose, mouth, or a**s.

- DANGER
Zoonotic (can infect humans); spores survive in soil for decades.

- ACTION
DO NOT open the carcass. Keep away and call a vet immediately.

2. FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE (FMD)

- SIGNS
Blisters in mouth and hooves, excessive drooling, lameness, reduced milk.

- DANGER
Extremely contagious; causes huge economic losses.

- ACTION
Isolate affected animals and report to veterinary authorities right away.

3. RABIES

- SIGNS
Aggressive or weird behavior, excessive drooling, trouble swallowing.

- DANGER
Always fatal once symptoms show; can spread to humans easily.

- ACTION
Avoid contact completely and call a veterinarian ASAP.

4. BRUCELLOSIS

- SIGNS
Abortions, infertility, weak newborns.

- DANGER
Spreads to humans via milk or direct contact; hard to control without testing.

- ACTION
Get a vet diagnosis and follow strict herd control measures.

5. CONTAGIOUS BOVINE PLEUROPNEUMONIA (CBPP)

- SIGNS
Severe coughing, labored breathing, nasal discharge.

- DANGER
Fast‑spreading respiratory disease; often needs government intervention.

- ACTION
Report immediately—do *not* attempt treatment yourself.

6. AFRICAN SWINE FEVER (ASF)

- SIGNS
High fever, red/darkened skin, sudden death.

- DANGER
No cure or vaccine; nearly 100% fatal in pigs.

- ACTION
Quarantine pigs instantly and inform a veterinarian.

1. Caused by Parasites: Babesiosis is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia. Different species of Babesia can infect different hosts.

2. Transmission: The parasites responsible for babesiosis are typically transmitted through the bite of infected ticks. When an infected tick feeds on a host, it can transmit the parasites, leading to infection.

3. Symptoms in Cattle: In cattle, symptoms of babesiosis include fever, anemia (resulting in pale mucous membranes), jaundice (giving rise to the term "redwater disease" due to red urine), weakness, lethargy, and sometimes death in severe cases.

4. Risk to Humans: While babesiosis primarily affects animals, including livestock, some Babesia species can also infect humans. Human babesiosis typically presents with symptoms similar to malaria, including fever, chills, sweats, fatigue, and hemolytic anemia. Why animals eat bone🦴?
In case of ruminants due to deficiency of phosphorus / pica

1. For Minerals (Calcium & Phosphorus)

Bones are rich in:
• Calcium
• Phosphorus
• Other trace minerals

Animals like dogs, hyenas, and wild carnivores eat bones to strengthen:
• Teeth
• Bones
• Muscles

In the wild, this helps prevent mineral deficiency.

Wild animals such as:
• Hyena
• Wolf
• Lion

eat the whole prey, including bones. It is a natural survival behavior.

HAPPY NEW MONTH FARMERS 🧑‍🌾👩‍🌾👨‍🌾

Many farmers complain that dewormers have stopped working…
but in most cases the problem is repeating the same dewormer for a long time.

What really happens?
When you use one type of dewormer continuously:
➡ Worms that survive the dose multiply
➡ They produce a new generation that the drug cannot kill
➡ Eventually the whole farm has resistant worms

Signs of dewormer resistance
▪ Animals remain with rough coat
▪ Diarrhoea keeps recurring
▪ Poor body condition
▪ Low milk production
▪ Bottle jaw in severe cases

How to avoid resistance
- Rotate dewormers using different active ingredients
- Deworm based on need — not routine guessing
- Dose according to correct body weight
- Avoid underdosing
- Improve nutrition (well-fed animals handle worms better)
- Practice paddocking where possible

💡 Golden rule:
Deworming program should be planned — not done because the calendar says so.

Lumpy skin disease (L*D) in cattle is caused by the Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (L*DV), a virus belonging to the genus Capripoxvirus within the family Poxviridae. It is a highly contagious, non-zoonotic infection primarily transmitted by biting insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, and flies.

Greetings, Famers. I have come with an advisory to say that it is true cattle are dying from January disease (theileriosis), which is caused by ticks. I therefore encourage you to have your cattle dipped at the homesteads where we live, by spraying our cattle, because at this time ticks are very many.
When spraying, let us do it properly: at least a 16-litre knapsack should cover 3-4 cattle. Let us also use tick grease, applying it in the ears, under the tail, on the udder, between the legs, and also use deadlines, as these help us.
At this time, we encourage you to use the 5-5-4 dipping method. If we do that, we will win this battle. Also, let us closely observe our cattle-whether they are grazing well and whether their behaviour has changed. If there are any signs of illness, report to the veterinary department quickly before the disease becomes severe. If we do that, we will overcome January disease; it is treatable.
